Hi fellow Toyota gurus ,Now I've been reading about the above oils and which one to use in my 2.2 2012 avensis and I'm edging towards 0w30 because I've read it's a more stable oil not relying on additives to stop it falling apart apparently . Now am I being daft trying this oil and is everyone going to scream don't do it .but I will need a  valid reason why ?.

5W-30 will be the Toyota preferred oil.

The preferred option is 0W20 low ash. 5W30 low ash is acceptable.

The correct grade for your 2AD Toyota engined car is 0W-30 or 5W-30: ACEA C2 do not use C3 this is for the later BMW engined models

Thanks for the replys , I would just use 5w30 low saps c2 , I'm not being a tight wad here but I can get 5w40 low saps c2 or 0w30 not quite sure if it's c2 or 3 yet through work free as to say 😇 And it would mean I could do a oil change whenever I wanted . I've ordered the 0w30 through work and I'll look at the label when it arrives from Shell.

ACEA C2 Diesel Engine Oil

ACEA C2 engine oil is suitable for diesel engines fitted with diesel particulate filters (DPFs), this specification is very similar to ACEA C1 but with a marginally higher SAPS limit.

ACEA C3 Diesel Engine Oil

ACEA C3 engine oils are suitable for diesel engines fitted with diesel particulate filters (DPFs). Very similar to C2 but without fuel-economy requirements.                            I have just found this  I'm starting to think modern oils are a black art with no right or wrong answer.

Im working at a Toyota dealer in Denmark.

For AD diesel engine the recommended oil is 5w-30 C2, like an option you can use 0w-30 C2, normally Country's like Sweden and Norway use it because of better cold start lubrication. And either of them is a longlife oil!

For WW BMW engines 5w-30 C3 *longlife* is the correct oil.

Why the C2 and C3 spec is so important is because how the engine is designed to absorb/clean out sood and carbon from the combustion.

Thanks for your reply I've just taken delivery of 20 Ltrs of Shell helix latest 0w30 oil which I'm going to use and change every 2500 miles and see what state the oil is each change it wil still get its Toyota service yearly to keep warranty with what ever cheap stuff they throw in . I also only use Shell optimax fuel which cost a eye watering £81 to fill up from empty . The cars just gone past 60000 miles and I plan to keep it until it starts to become a money pit . I'm getting 45mpg at the moment with the wife driving it everyday 40 mile round trip half A roads and half motorway .

it shouldn't be cheap stuff albeit they will buy oil a lot cheaper than you or I can. It should comply with the specs for the vehicle.

I also only use shell optimax fuel

You mean V-power.

As mr Clarkson would say POWERRR my wife just rolls her eyes when I look at her and floor the avensis saying it lol . Funny thing is regarding oil and main dealers and I worked in a few over a ten year period was when I filled cars with oil it always came out of the same big tank via the pump gun and the manager would take the reading once a week . Now the only time we put in expensive oil was when a customer supplied it . Now I worked at Toyota , Mazda, Honda , Subaru and it was always the same .
