Running Costs

Ever wondered exactly what a Rav4 costs to run? Here's a little snapshot based on 18 months data. It's obviously not perfect and only a summary, but could be useful for anyone trying to work out what they are actually looking at in terms of cost.

Car is a 5 door AWD Gen 4.2 2.0 D4D XTR (55 plate)

  • Average cost per mile (total): 28.7p/mile
  • Averaged fuel cost: 15.2p/mile (mix of premium and regular)
  • Average expenses: 13.5p/mile

The average expense cost is broken down as follows:

  • Servicing 3.8p/mile
  • Expenses 9.7p/mile

Expenses include everything not directly from a fuel pump, VED ('road tax'), MOT, servicing/maintenance and parts costs, tools specifically purchased for the car, Haynes etc. - my labor is free except when it comes to tyre fitting or other specialist work.

Before anyone gets too focused on those numbers obviously age/location and type of insurance will have an impact on things and spreading a fixed cost over a larger number of miles will lower the average, other things like servicing costs and tyre wear obviously go up the more miles you do, but until they are required the average will keep dropping. If you pay dealer rates for service work then at £380 a pop for a major service + £40 for gearbox fluids (74.10 in parts inc gearbox fluids) and £500+ for a full set of disks and pads (£100 in parts) then things would obviously look a little different. The above figures are based on doing circa 8,000 miles a year.

My mpg ranges from 30.83 to 37.26, not allowing for the time of year/temp/driving pattern the 30.83mpg actually has the second lowest cost per mile of 14.4p/mile, if you exclude the best and worst results then i've had 33-34mpg out of all fuel types used which is (to me) well within the anticipated variation of mixed driving and I can expect 420 miles out of a brimmed tank.

Hope some is this is vaguely useful to someone :)
