Our 14 year old Yaris - MOT story

The Yaris d4d is now 14 years old and its MOT was due 9th March so being a mean so and so, I booked it online with Kwikfit £27 for  last Tuesday. It failed on a broken rear spring . I admit I had checked everything including lights and front ARB rubbers (now Focus rear arb rubbers) but not the springs. Passenger side rear coil had broken near the bottom.

Ordered one that pm from carparts4less- ECP's name on eBay. Just under £36.  Made by Sachs. Delivered from Germany via plane and DHL and arrived Thusday. Tracking real time and very good service. Easily fitted in an hour. (jack up both rear wheels, axle stands under body, remove lower shock absorbers fixed to suspension, lower wheels remove spring and replace..)

Car retested on Monday this week  Passed. £13.50, Whilst there there were 2x 2014plate cars being tested. One - a Volvo estate - failed due to 3 broken bulbs. The other a BMW has two broken bulbs. I left after 30 minutes - two mechanics were trying to fit the Volvo bulbs.. and had been for all the time I was there!

Yaris is still on all its original bulbs - except Headlamps ones replaced in 2006 with Hi output bulbs .

Hmm says a lot about BMW/Volvo quality - or lack of it.

Says a lot about the owners/drivers. A quick check around the BMW and Volvo before the MOT would have highlighted the broken bulbs. Sadly all too common in today's world.

My 1999 Yaris 1.0 petrol (107,000 miles) recently failed the MOT - just on emissions. Garage had a look and found a loose vacuum pipe. They secured it and it passed no problem. No advisory items either. This is the first time it's failed the MOT in the 4 years I've had it. Quality car.

Regarding the lights, I had a Peugeot 3008 that had a blown brake light. It's gone through several headlight bulbs in my time which I changed myself. So I thought no bother, I'll change the brake light myself.

Impossible. Most of the rear trim needs to come out just to access the light cluster. No guides on the internet either. A useless car in all respects.

Our 2003 Corolla 'failed' its last MOT on a blown rear tail light. As it was being serviced as well it cost just the price of the bulb.
