Dash Needles

Although its no big deal, but the needle on my speedo when the car is stationary is not exactly in the middle of the zero marking and ive noticed this is common on pics ive seen when searching for a fix. The rev counter needle is fine. I think it is TAVY who has supplied details for changing the leds for colour preference  and states you must only turn the needle anticlockwise and pull to remove. well as my needle reading slightly high then turning the needle very slightly anticlockwise I should be able to adjust it to where I want it without any need to remove the needle.

I again read you should mark the dash with a pencil so as to refit a needle to its original position, but why, as the dash is already has a zero mark where the needle should point to so why is a marking needed.

Does anyone know how accurate are the speed readings on a portable sat nav, I have a TomTom  910 an older version but working fine.

I understand speedos are calibrated to read slightly fast, but ii would like to check how much at different speeds.

According to TOYOTA in 5th gear one my car one thousand revs equals 20 mph ie 3 thousand revs = 60 mph..my car shows 63 but there how accurate is my rev counter though.

Any advice or suggestions would be very welcome.

As far as I'm aware, the speed calculated by the GPS system is an average taken over a number of points.

As regards speedometer accuracy, it is illegal to show a speed less than that actually being travelled. Speedometers for the UK market must show no more than 110%, and for speeds between 25mph and 70mph, must show no more than 110% plus 6.25mph. For example at a true speed of 50mph, the speedometer must show no more than 61mph.

The UK legislation differs from that in the EU, where one doesn't have the additional requirement for speeds between 25mph and 70mph.

As far as I'm aware there is no requirement governing the accuracy of rev counters.

Neither of my cars speedo needle stays in the middle of zero.

After I dismantled the clocks and put them back (soldered an wire for an external TRIP button) , I checked speedo accuracy with a TomTom; at speed of 100 kmph (62 mph) red by speedo, TomTom shows 95 kmph (59 mph). This is speedo's accuracy noticed by me since the car was new.

I don't no if the odometer accuracy is dependent on the speedo accuracy but this may be why so many average fuel consumption readings are nearly always optimistic on a lot of cars.

About the needle position, unlike my Auris some cars have a small pin (for the want of a  better word) that the needle rest on at the zero position.

By the way for those who don't know the dash assembly on an Auris  is made in Germany by Seaman.

Bit confused about the needle removing now after reading the Auxiliary Display Switch fitting by sconix in the Auris Club Guides section where it states do not move the needle before pulling off, where Tavy states move needle anti clockwise before pulling off.

Sorry to be a pain about this but I want to get the job done properly.

If you look at pic of sconix speedo you will see his needle is not zeroed very well either.

I cant open the picture guides on Speedchasers LED replacement just maybe because how long ago that he wrote this great article.

At any speedo/tachometer that I dismantled, the procedure is the same: make a small mark at the tip of needle, then rotate the needle anti clockwise while pulling it off.

When you put back the needle, start with the needle positioned somewhere in the middle of dial, rotate it anti clockwise while pushing it in, up to reach with it's tip the mark that you made it before.

If the tip is not positioned at this marking, don't try to reposition turning left or right the needle, but take the needle out and put it back again.

I am thinking that I may well change the dash lighting leds but looking at post about doing this, non of dash lighting leds shown or those needed are like the ones on my optitron dash, the ones other are using seem to be all square having soldering points visible. when the chap replaced my indicator dash light he removed a small round surface mounted round led and the soldering was done underneath by poking the solder under the led.. the only place I can find showing a psb like mine with the same led is the pics sconix has on his instructions for fitting an auxiliary display switch in Auris Club Guides. But as I am thing of replacing the display leds as well as the dial ones I need to how many to order. ( and where best to order.)

I think its 3 led for each display but not sure how many are needed for each dial.

Is there a choice of brightness for these led or are they just one  standard brightness.

I would be grateful for any advice. I have tried contacting the chap who replaced my indicator led but he is abroad for a couple of weeks.

I apologize to pajjy for placing the above request  for help in his posting, not doubt caused by my senile decay, for the want of a better excuse.

The method of removing speedometer needles depends on the type of motor fitted. Some are twist and pull, some are lift off. Most, but not all, without rest pins have stops in the motors and are twist and pull, most, and again not all, with rest pins are pull straight up. Some require specialist tools to remove the needles so as not to damage the motors in particular BMW E38, E39, E53 and Range Rover Sports and Discoverie3 & 4.
