Avensis t25 2008 1ad ftv 2.0 diesel starting problems

Hi my friend has bought a 2008 avensis 

it struggles to start but if your press  the primer on the fuel pump it eventually starts.

we have changed fuel filter and fuel filter housing and pipes going to fuel pump.

Oil and filter 

air filter

Is there air getting into the system? Is something clogged which isnt allowing enough diesel through the filter

Welcome to the forum. I'd be interested to see if there are any stored codes in the ecu. This sounds like it may be related to the scv. There is a modified valve and software update available, if you search this forum there is more information.

No engine management light on. We have changed starter too as burnt the other out trying to turn it over.

Apprently it was cutting out too at traffic lights but hasnt since new filter but struggling to start after new filter

Are you implying that starting was ok before the new filter? Management light off doesn't mean no codes stored. Has it ever been on during the time you've had the fault? The new filter sounds like it helped with the symptom, low fuel flow, but isn't the root cause. Just out of curiosity, are you sure the egr valve is clean? It can cause poor starting and rough running if dirty.

Not sure if the filter might be the problem are you aware there is 2 different types of filter?

I know the 1cd engine takes a bigger filter and 1ad takes a thinner one is this what you mean

Yes exactly I was given a thinner one for my 1cd as a mistake before.
