Avensis T250 vs Avensis T270 - vital differences?

My sister is thinking of buying a 2008 T250 Avensis 1.8 petrol. Everything seems well, so I’m happy to give a positive advice on that.

There is one “problem”. The T250 went out of production in 2008. So, a preowned 2009 T270 1.8 petrol should not be significantly more expensive.

My question: is a T270 Avensis a significantly better car than a T250 Avensis. End – if yes – why so?

Both cars have a 5-star EURO NCAP crash rating. Although I’m not really sure how these stars get awarded. The T250 was tested in 2003. The T270 in 2009. Did the "rules" changed during this period?

The T250 has a 5-speed manual gearbox. The T270 has a 6-speed. So I suspected a lower fuel consumption fort the T270. Although, when I searched for actual fuel consumption (via spritmonitor.de), the difference seems to be marginal.
I do suspect a difference in the number of rpm in the final gear. Does anyone know what the number of rpm is at 120 kmh / 75 mph in the final gear for both the T250 and the T270?

Obviously the T270 looks more modern. Is it also build better? Is it more quiet? Do the seats sit better? Or is the T250 just an older car, but just as good the own for the coming 5 to 8 years?

Both great cars in my opinion, we have four avensis at are house, t22, two t25 and a t27. My father bought a t27 last year and dose like it buts says he prefers the t25, comfort and driving.

I have your answers as I did a back to back read the following -

Your question regarding the gearing is interesting because I found the engine noise, smoothness, plus the fuel consumption is not affected too much.

http://www.cars-data.com/en/toyota-avensis-wagon-1.8-16v-vvt-i-luna-specs/47727 The T25 is rated at 3250 rpm at 120 kph. There is no details on the T27 but I would say roughly 400 - 500 rpm less in 6th gear. For refinement at motorway speeds, my old T22 1.8 did not give much away to my current T27, on the same trip over the weekend. I went to Brighton for a car show (Brighton Breeze) on Saturday, and Sunday for Landrover.

Fuel consumption depends on the age and condition of the engine, and how well it has been serviced.

The T25 is well equipped in TR, but loses out on cruise control. The T27 can have the paint crack at the front door strap, due to the metal flexing. Also has the dreaded EPB. Reliability is not a problem on either. Test drive both before deciding.

Yes, what is necessary to achieve the grades is continuously re-evaluated.

The T250/T270 are different platforms (unlike e.g. the 2 generations of Auris). What you will find is that a 2008 Avensis will be more highly specified for the same grade than a 2009 - it had to sell on value  against more modern competitors whereas the T27 could sell on  being a brand new design & therefore didn't have to be as highly kitted out for the money to compete.

Seats are a very subjective thing as what suits 1 may not suit another. I have been happy in both but I know that others have not been.

The T25 has a VVTi 1ZZ-FE 127bhp, the T27 a Valvematic 1ZR-FAE 139bhp.

Mainly because of the overal Toyota reliablilty combined with lots of space (two kids). They own a T22 Avensis for 8 years now and they have been very happy with it. For them it is the ideal type of car.

Why I asked to consider a T27 Avensis over a T25 Avensis is because of the 6 years of development that seperates these models. Therefore I reckened that the T27 should be a better car in almost every aspect (one more than the other), without having real proof

I have owned both and the T27 of course is and feels like a more modern platform. Both in looks and handling. I would not buy the older one if price is almost the same.

Here is an update!

My sister eventually went for the T27 Avensis

Reasons why:

  • Probably safer (test crash results of the T25 and T27 are difficult to compare)
  • More quiet. We found the T25 to be rather noisy at cruising speeds on the highway (3250 rpm and more).
  • No AUX connection on the OEM radio in the T25.
  • No cruise control on the T25.
  • More modern look and feel of the T27.

Again thank you for all the advice!
