tpms

Hello all.

I'm new to this club/forum and not sure if this is the correct section.

I drive a 2016 Toyota Yaris 1.5vvt-i hybrid.

My question is related to the tpms. I have read alot about this and can not get my head around it. I have the automatic version with no reset button and i am unable to understand all I've read and been told about it.

If anyone could shed some light on the function/usage of this system i would be very grateful.

Hello Aion - welcome to Toyota Owners Club.

Post moved to the Yaris club.

For vehicles sold within the EU, tpms became a compulsory fitment for vehicles first registered after 1st November 2014. There are basically two types of system:

1). an indirect system where the ABS/ESC sensors monitor the rotation of the wheels and if a difference in diameter is noticed, this is indicative of a lower pressure in a tyre/s, and a tpms warning light is displayed. This system doesn't inform which tyre/s has/have low pressure. Can be affected by ambient temperature. Resetting is usually done by a button or by a menu item in the car's information centre/computer.

2). A direct system where air pressure sensors are installed on each wheel which physically measure the tyre pressures of each tyre, and reports back to the vehicle's information display.

If you have the second system, then this link shows a picture of the sensor that is inside each wheel. On your car the visible part of the valve stem and its unusual nut might give a clue as to if a sensor is fitted.

Each sensor is motion-sensitive (to conserve the button cell it uses for power), when in motion it sends a radio signal every minute that shows tyre pressure and the unit's own unique identifier.  This is decoded by the receiver in the car.

I'm not sure this really helps you much; my car doesn't have them fitted so I can't discuss the reset/set functions etc.

Thanks for the reply and information.

My yaris has these metal cased valves mentioned (brilliant photos thanks) and a light on the dash that so far only lights up when starting informing its presence.

From videos i have seen it seems to be an automatic system but what reference it uses seems to baffle me.

If the car is parked and looses pressure is this registered? Or does it simply contrast pressure from start up along the way?

If i inflate or check the tyre pressure will i upset it and have to reset the system?

I have no reset button and untill i have to intervene id much prefer to find out as much as possible.

Thanks millions for your help and info

Mine has the reset type with transponders in the wheels.

It requires that you switch off the car, adjust the tyre pressures, start the car BUT DO NOT MOVE, push and hold the reset under the dash until the TPMS blinks 3 times, then leave the vehicle ON but stationary for around 5 minutes. After this time, switch off the car, then use as normal.

I'd be surprised if yours had a different system.

Check the owners manual for the location of the reset switch.
