Hello there

I am after some advice before I book my car into a garage to have it looked at and they might charge me a silly amount of money.

Last year I bought a 2006 1.6 Toyota Corolla SR and I noticed then that once in a blue moon I had trouble to get the car into gear especially first or reverse, or even out of gear. Had to use force to get it out of gear.

Now it seems to get a bit worse. I struggle to get the car into gear or out of gear, sometimes I am sitting there in my car and try a good minute to get the car into first gear now to be clear this does not happen constantly, they are days where the car is totally fine with no struggle and then it is back again like shifting from second gear into 5th.

Very difficult to say what the cause of your problem is, apart from the gearbox itself, it could be the gear linkage or even a failing clutch. ie not disengaging fully.

Though most garages will be able to find the fault, if its the gearbox that typically means a replacement box, if thats the case you need to search for a local "gearbox/transmission" specialist who might be able to repalr it; they typically do clutches as good prices too.

Edit  - assume the gearbox oil level is correct  / changed recently ?
