Hi All

My daughter ran out fuel whilst driving the Corolla T3 and she kept trying to start it until she flattanned the Battery. I have since refuelled it and jump started it. It starts first time but wont run when I disconnect the jump leads. I checked the batterry voltage and it showed around 11.5V so I took the Battery out of the car and charged it fully.

When I reconnected it back up it showed 12.6V and it started fine. However the red Battery light stayed on so I took it for a run on the dual carriageway but it stayed on constantly, not even flickering. When I got home I checked the battery and it showed a constant 12.05V. Revving the engine has no effect on the volts. When I switched off the engine the volts jumped up to 12.4V.

I get the feeling the alternator is not sending anything back to the battery. Could I have blown a fuse whilst jump starting it ? The only fuse I could see in the engine fuse box is a 100 amp one for the alternator. Its a see through one and it seems ok. If it was blown would the car start.?

I hope the alternator is not fried.

Thanx in advance

It does sound like the Battery is not getting the charge.

If you are very careful, you can measure the voltage on the main , heavy wire, output connector of the alternator with the voltmeters positive lead and neg lead  to the chassis and see its its giving out around 14.2v when reving around 2000rpm .

If not then it does sound like you have fried it, but if its ok then probably the fuse, might have burn out part you cannot see ( long time since I change one of those fuses)

Hi codger

Do you mean chassis of the car or alternator?

Both  or Either .

The Engine Block, Alternator, Cars boywork / chassis should all be at the same 'negative  potential.

Of the many wires from the Battery negative terminal, one will go nearby and bolts to the chassis, the other to the engine/gearbox.

Often they, partic the cars chassic one, can become corroded, so its a good point to check /clean whenever you have any elecrical problem.

Hi

Tha test shows 11.96V and not much change when revved. In fact it drops a little sometimes when revved up.

Without being there to confirm, think you are reading the batteries voltage flowing back down the alternators cable and that the alternators regulator pack is blown etc.

Reving the car uses more power from the Battery so you will see the batterys voltage dip.

That kind of proves that the fuse and cable are ok, but clearly, nothing coming out of the alternator.

You can prove it for sure, first disconnect the Battery.

Then disconnect the big cable from the positive output of the alternator,

Tie the cable up out of the way and ensure its metal eyelet is insulated with tape etc  ( if it moves and touches the chassis you have serious problems !)

Reconnect the Battery.

Start the car and measure the alternators output pin   -  on the DC scale, then try and see if you get a reading on the 20v AC scale .

Very important you repeat the above battery disconnecton when putting the alternators cable back onto the alternator.

At 14 years old, if its blown then a repair /exchange complete alternator probably the simplest option,  imho.
