Avensis Air con not working

My 09 Avensis petrol auto's air con is not cooling the air to any degree - is it best to go to the main dealer or an air con specialist. I presume the system requires the refrigerant refilling - hopefully nothing worse like the compressor. As far as I know it has not been topped up since new.

Without a leak test it's impossible to know for sure why the refrigerant leaked, but it's likely to be slow leak past the seals. A main stealer will check for leaks, but there are other places to go, if you do though, I suggest you website that they aren't just going to recharge the system without doing a leak test to make sure it's not all just going to hiss out again....

I have my own gauges and sniffer because I got sick of being rinsed by ac specialists when I lived state side.

This may not apply to the poster, Duggerz has mentioned the fact that the refrigerant may leak past seals, if the seals are not lubricated by regular use. I used mine during the winter to demist the windows. My old car still had working A/C because I used it at least once a month.

I thought that who ever did the air-con recharge did a leak test and check there was gas still in the system, before gassing. It would not make sense to fill a leaking system. I would take to any body who has good comeback, so you don't have to go to a dealer!

Seconded for a specialist. Got mine checked out for free at a local guy popped on his machine and pressues and outlet temps checked. Told  me it was at about 85-90% full and didn't really need a recharge. Said to come back in the summer if it didn't feel cold enough

Charges £30 for a vac down and recharge. Nice to see these small businesses under a railway arch still exist. Good online reviews and used by a lot of local garages.

Hi guys, thanks for your input. Ended up at a local aircon specialist who checked it all out and recharged it for £49. Seems it was down to 49gr of refrigerant and should have been 450gr. Has lasted 8 years without a top up but will get it checked every 2 or 3 years from now on.
