Lack of a flashing red light

Greetings from a newbie.

Just got my son a 2005 T2 Yaris  as a first car which runs well but I'm confused as the red security light that is meant to flash when you take out the key stays off.  It never flashes.  Car has 2 Toyota black master keys which will both start the car no problems.  As the car does start with the supplied Toyota key I cannot work out weather this means the immobiliser/alarm is working or not?  Any thoughts gratefully received.  Many thanks.

So when you lock it  walk about 5 meters away with the keys and look, is the red light flashing?

Try leaving a front window open and locking the car, leave it a few mins then lean in and open the door from inside and see if the alarm goes off.
