The 1ad engine is in principle very reliable and if maintained properly will keep going for at least 200k miles with examples of over 300k out there.

The injector seats can be a problem and the early copper ones were updated to an aluminium version because of blowby causing carbon deposits. The injectors do fail occasionally, and if this happens be persisted for a1k bill if you want a specialist to do the swap. Mine are getting ropey but still original after 200k. They don't have anything near the failure rate for head gaskets that the 2.2 has because of the lower power output, but check for a white deposit just behind the rad cap.

Other than that they are quite reliable....

Isn't the 1AD the one where they were doing engine replacements for the early gen ones due to bad oil circulation or something?

Nauxcorolla - does your profile need updating to include the Avensis?

The AD series engine in the Avensis (1AD and 2AD) were both affected by the oil consumption  and head gasket issues. With the Avensis, affected engines were built between April 2005 and February 2009.
