2002 Avensis Estate Radio Problems

Hi guys  - haven't posted here for awhile as really had no need to .... Had my car since 2004 ,  two years old one previous owner , it's done 155k and still going strong with existing exhaust and clutch and apart from occasional light bulb blowing it has been bullet proof .  Passes MOT every year so intend to keep it  and use it for work until it costs me money and will be a sad day indeed when we eventually part company ...

Anyway minor niggle that I am hoping someone is able to help out with ..  My left hand Speakers keep switching on and off intermittently and not sure whether it is a problem with head unit or not ?  Doesn't appear to be Speakers as they work on the left hand side when they do come on ... obviously I have tried adjusting fade and balance controls etc. but when they go off that doesn't make any difference either. No problems with the right hand side ones .  I have considered getting a replacement head unit  to  be able to play music from my phone but not sure whether this is possible .  I have the Mk1 facelift unit with the heater/ air con controls below the CD player ( W53804 ) Ideally I would like to be able to remove that and slot a radio in there if that is possible and therefore keep the trip / temperature readings on the original unit . I am not worried about keeping the sat nav or losing steering wheel controls if necessary ...   I have found a video clip of how to remove the whole radio / CD / Aircon control unit but not how to separate CD unit ( if possible )

Be interested to hear if anyone has done this in the past and if so with what result etc.  Or .... if anyone could advise whether the problem could be solved with just getting a replacement original total unit off flea bay .

Many thanks for any help.

You will need the Toyota to ISO adapter harness PC2-17-4 which will enable you to plug a CD/radio player of your choice. If you have steering controls, then PC99-209 may work.

The hard bit is the facia for your model. I looked in the Armour Autoleads catalogue and can only find the single din version. http://www.armourautoretail.com/sites/armourautoretail.com/files/2015_ArmourAutoleads_Catalogue(FINAL)_PRINT_LowResWeb2.pdf

Search on eBay, Amazon or any in car entertain specialists, and you will find the PC2-17-4 cable you need cheaply. The items will need careful investigation, because due to the age of the car, supply and demand will be far lower.

Once you replace the audio unit, you may find the Speakers the limiting factor, especially at higher volume.

Hi Konrad  - many thanks for your reply and help .  Did go to Halfords first  and they couldn't help although I was willing to purchase head unit from them ...

I knew that I would have a problem sourcing the fascia ( If there is indeed one ) and so might have to improvise somehow ....  Do you know how easy it is to separate the CD unit from the whole radio , climate control unit ? Presumably the adapter you suggest will just connect the new radio head unit  where the old CD unit was into the existing harness so as not to affect existing controls etc ?  Re Speakers - don't have music at too high volume these days ... and due to age of vehicle don't think it worth upgrading them . .... Really just want to sort the intermittent cutting out on the one side and thought I might kill two birds with the one stone so to speak ;-)     Cheers

I appreciate your your help with this mate and for posting links which I am in the process of checking out ..... I presume that there is no cutting / crimping involved with this adapter harness and it just connects up all existing leads etc. Also that I have to purchase a head unit which has the sockets compatible with this adapter ? ?

Yes no cutting and crimping. Just plug and play. It cuts the risk of bad connections, shorting and electrical fires. The head unit should have ISO (industry standard) so you just plug the Toyota/ISO adapter harness to the head unit to ISO harness. This is how I like things, plus if you need to sell on the head unit or swap it to another car, just unplug and fit in another car.

Hi  Konrad

Wonder if I could pick your brains a bit more ?  I have pulled the centre console to  have a look see  before ordering the ISO adapter .  However before I pull all the connectors could you please advise as to where the new  ISO adapter connects to  ?  As I am removing the CD player to put  the new head unit in it’s place is the adapter connected to the leads that came out of this unit and then into the new radio head unit ?  If this is the case hopefully I can just pull the leads from the existing head unit in situ and just remove the cd player before connecting up the adapter to the new head unit . Does this make sense ???

Also I notice you corresponded with a Bearwood Brown on U Tube a few years back but he doesn’t seem to have his channel any more !

He did an installation in the same model Avensis as mine but didn’t  give wiring details only for the speaker repair .  Did you get any more info from him ?

Thanks  Andy
