Over the weekend I was in County Mayo, sorting things out for my wedding.

I've mentioned it a few times (I think),  but the bird hates my Corolla. She thought I bought it as a bargain basement runaround until I got "something better", but since I've gotten to know the car and learned a lot about the Corolla's and Toyota's in general, the more it's become apparent to her that this is a long term thing. I'm not even sorry.

Anyway, thrashing around the country roads of Mayo in a rental car (Hyundai Tucson for those playing at home), she wouldn't shut up about how nice the Hyundai was and that I should get one. She wasn't driving. While it was comfortable and well equipped, I could not get comfortable in the car. It's not a drivers car.

Not going to lie, the continual praise of the Tucson and me missing driving my Corolla every kilometer I drove started to grate on me. Until I started to notice how many E11's from 1998 to 2002 were driving on the roads where we were. I started to point them out. "There's my Corolla. There's another one. Look at that one I didn't know they made saloon versions", she got annoyed.

Ultimately she said "I can't believe you're not bothered with this nice car and you're more interested in the *Sugar Honey Ice Tea* Corolla". To which I replied "We're in deepest darkest Ireland, where the roads are utter crap and you could quite literally break your car just driving down the road. You've seen one or two of these Hyundai's and other fancy cars, yet you can't go 10 minutes without seeing a Corolla. They're bulletproof, reliable, and they're dependable". She couldn't argue with that. Those who've driven around Mayo will know how bad the roads are, and how far away you can be from a town. You can't have a car that's going to break, and it's obvious that nearly every other car was an E11 Corolla.

Although, I will say, I only saw one hatchback version. The rest were the 5-door liftback versions. Even still, it was lovely to see so many Corolla's out and about and being used! Or abused, depends which way you look at it!

The Corolla was Ireland's best selling car for a number of years. However, the Hyundai Tucson was the best seller in 2016.
