Toyota Avensis 2000 Hatchback

Oh my. My Rottweiler has done my rear offside window in. Seems he did not take to a person walking past and so got his front legs onto the half open window to demonstrate - only half opens anyway. But now the window mechanism makes a noise and the glass does not move, can hear some electric engine sounds but no window movement at all. Think this is going to mean a strip down of that back door and a check as to what has happened. Would love to get cross with my brute dog, but, he will not let others enter it when he is in charge - oh, I always leave windows partly open for air, wide open when its hot, and I am as quick as I can be, never more than 20 minutes. My dog is my best friend, and the Avensis is his favourite car.

Before I carry out a big strip, is there any quick fix. The glass pane slides up or down by hand now.

Thanks for looking

The door strip is straight forward - remove door handle screws in the trim and in the door pull near the window control, disconnect and lift the window control out, remove cover to door handle, undo the door plastic clips long the door trim with philips screw driver - these are twist and pull, then lift off the trim. There is a plastic cover that needs to be carefully removed to access the window mechanism. After this you need to reconnect the window control to see what is wrong with the window lifter.

Possible faults are: -

  • the glass has detached from the glued fixing
  • the cable has detached/broken
  • the motor gears are broken giving partial movement

If the glass has detached, then try a strong adhesive. Failing that, the glass will need replacing.

If it is the lifter mechanism, it will need replacing unless something can be corrected easily. Just a matter of sourcing a breakers yard with a higher spec (GLS/CD).
