Slight coolant leak - drips on ground

Hi all,

I have noticed that our 2007 Auris 1.6 has a very slight coolant leak.  After many hours of the car sitting still, i.e. overnight, there will be a couple of drips of coolant on the floor. around the offside area of the engine.  I know it's coolant because I put some cardboard under the car to try and see if the oil was leaking (trying to diagnose excess consumption), so I wasn't expecting to see coolant..!

Are there any common leak points on these?  I have been under the car and thoroughly poking around and cannot detect anything.   I guess the next step is some UV dye.

Thanks.

Hello,

By offside, you mean right-hand side of the car. In that case I would look at the water pump and cooling pipes in that area.

The following images are of the cooling system, including the thermostat housing and the cooling pump.

The cooling pump housing.

Hope this all helps.

Thanks! Yes, I mean the right-hand side (as you're sitting in the car).  I was wondering if the water pump is the culprit.  It's literally a couple of drips overnight though so this could be tricky to pinpoint.  I'll look at the area in more detail though!   Are they a common failure?

I cannot say if it a common failure. Normally lack of service, over-tightened drive belt, or wear and tear with age affect the how long a water pump lasts. 10 years is not bad, and add the factor that the car is low geared, so the engine is spinning higher than my Avensis 1.8 which is much higher geared in 5th - my car has 6 gears so is roughly 1000 rpm lower at 70 mph. The cars use the same water pump so it will be less stressed in my car than yours.
