Hello,

ive been driving my mothers 2010 1.2L Renault Clio(petrol)  for 2 years and have never konked out or stalled it.

Iast week I bought my first car, 07 Toyota auris 1.4L petrol. I can't hill start in it to save my life. Even on a flat road, if I put the handbreak up and try to get up the bite and go it will either....

a) shudder (most times I can give it gas and save it)

b) revs really high and loudly.

c) honks out on my when I try and take off.

this never happened in the Clio, I've linked out about 10 times week & I've my driving test at the end of the month in my new car.

anyone have tips or advice? 😭

Hmm.

What happens if you roll to stop, but not quite (avoiding use of the handbrake) and catching the car and pulling away before the car stops rolling (2-3 MPH)? Is it OK?

I've not done that yet, but if I tried to catch the car using the clutch and gas I would probably end up Reving it really high.

i have crawled slowly up a hill in traffic slowing down and continuing on, but not slow enough to have to control the weight of the car using the clutch, if that makes sense?

Its me that is the problem, I hopefully will master it soon, just wanted to know if anyone else had similar troubles when they first got one.

If you have any accessible car parks nearby which have a slope, and which are unused in the evenings or weekends, try to use them to practice getting used to the accelerator pressure needed and the bite point, when moving off both on the flat and on a slope.

Good luck! You will get there! :)

I second FROSTYBALLS suggestion of practising in a quite car park.

I had problems stalling my '09 Avensis from the time I bought it in Sept 15, up to the day I put the car in for a new clutch - end of April. Since the clutch replacement, the car has been a joy. Even though the cars and engines are different, I can assume the problems could be down to lack of feel, lack of engine torque, engine pick-up when it revs to compensate not there, the clutch is worn or not quite right or just not used to the car.

Now that I had the clutch changed, my car is much more like my old Avensis. You can let the clutch up with hardly any revs needed, except on hill starts, smooth and quiet take-offs, less time at biting point. Read my posts and see if it is similar to yours:-

You can try and adapt, but if there is something not quite right with the car, you are then driving around that problem.

Seconded; Clutch issues can make it very easy to stall no matter how good your clutch control is.

When I got my first Yaris, I found it increasingly difficult to move off up a hill, but I did the old put-it-in-gear-and-see-how-easy-it-is-to-stall-the-car-with-the-handbrake-on trick and it passed easily so I initially assumed it couldn't be the clutch.

However, after putting up with it for ages, I finally got annoyed enough at it that I got someone to look at it and we found the clutch plate was absolutely fine aside from extra wear about the outer inch or so, BUT the diaphragm spring was half-collapsed on one side so the clutch wasn't engaging properly, and the release bearing was badly worn - Clear signs the previous owner had been riding the clutch like a jockey.

It was replaced and the car was immediately much easier to move off in; I didn't even have to use the accelerator when engaging the clutch to move off up a hill!

Spot on Cyker. We have both had similar issues and replacing the clutch seems to resolve them.
