Toyota introduced the world’s first vehicle powered by a lean-burn engine. This remarkable powerplant could run on extremely lean air-fuel mixtures, and achieved fuel efficiency about 20% higher than conventional engines. But lean-burn technology also presented a problem: it hampered the catalytic converter’s ability to remove NOx from the exhaust. Toyota continued working on a new-generation lean-burn engine, and in 1994 perfected the NOx storage reduction catalytic converter.

Toyota has been installing lean-burn engines in passenger cars since 1984. And it has pioneered several technologies for making lean-burn technology more practical. Among those technologies are oxygen sensors, which monitor the concentration of oxygen in the exhaust. Electronic engine control systems use feedback from those sensors to manage combustion more precisely. Another Toyota advance is an intake-valve system that swirls the air-fuel mix to promote smooth, rapid combustion. That overcomes the traditional tendency of lean air-fuel mixtures to burn slowly and unevenly. Toyota shares its O2 sensor technology with other automakers in the spirit of promoting industrywide efforts to reduce air pollution.

Hello Pedro,

Basically, lean burn means the engine uses less petrol. You see, when the engine runs, it has to mix petrol and air. Most conventional engines, the ratio is something like, 1 part of petrol to 14 part air. But lean burn engine increases the amount of air even further so it can be like 1 part of petrol to 25 part of air or even more, consequently getting better fuel consumption.

But the problem is that if you increase the air too much, it will not burn well and cause the engine to knock or detonate. But the wonderful Toyota technology, which dub_boy described had made this possible without the side effects.

The lean burn technology is even used on current engines such as 2 litre 1AZ-FSE D4 engines.

In one sentence - Efficient Engine.

Now you know. If you drive a Toyota, you are getting the cutting edge technology at fraction of the price.
