Dual Air-con works on drivers side only - 2009 Av. Tourer

Hello,

My Avensis 2009 Tourer TR has dual zone climate control, passenger side and driver side. Today the passenger side air vents are delivering warm air, not cold. Temperature is set to 20'C. The driver side air vents are delivering cold air as normal. Outside temperature is 22'C so I would expect the air con to kick in.

I've tried changing all the controls, Dual on/off. A/C on/off. Temp to high and then to low. Ignition off and on. But still the same.

Any ideas about this fault?

I've booked in for a service this week and would like to know approx cost to fix?

99% low Aircon gas. They should check for leaks before putting new gas and oil. Common things are rubber seals failing. If one has failed I recommend changing all of them. I refiled my car this way 3 years in a roll. Because of the rubber seals, as they fail one after another, and the refilling procedure is far more expensive than the seals.

A re-gas has fixed the problem. Looking back in my service sheets, the last time the car had an air-con service was Spring 2013, so it was probably due one.

You don't need to go to Toyota for air-con re-gas so long as the place doing the work is competent and does the job properly. My old '98 Avensis was re-gassed every 5 years and lasted a long time - it was working up to the point I sold the car last year. I used it all year round - in winter to help clear the windows, and also when it rains. This also keeps the system healthy longer by stopping the seals from shrinking.

I'm happy for Toyota to do it, just wondered if they check for leaks and properly remove the old refrigerant, before refilling?

I'm keen to get it done at the 5 year Toyota service, but only if Toyota do all the right stuff and not just squirt some extra gas in the system.

The modern way is using a dedicated computer controlled air con machine, I had one done last year, first the refrigerant is extracted and measured for type and volume next it vacuums the system and removes the oil, again checking for type and volume, next a pressure leak test is carried out and if all is good the oil is inserted followed by the correct amount and type of refrigerant, the entire process is automatic and the operation took under an hour and the guy set it up then went off doing other jobs while the machine did it's work, the cost?  A bargain at under £40.00. you get a print out from the machine when it finishes giving all the details of amounts removed and amounts replaced.

The refrigerant the machine removes is checked by the machine and if in good order is reused, blooming clever.

That's what I meant lol. Anyone know if Toyota dealers use these machines?

It depends on the Toyota dealer you feel using. Some of them are using the old method, some of them have the automated machines. Just ask.
