Leak on coolant bottle/pipe

Hi folks,

So I recently bought a Avensis, its a 2004 2.0vvti (1az-fse). Anyway, I occasionally need to top up the coolant and have noticed a red residue on the bottle as pictured. Any ideas what this may be down to? is it simply the pipe that is loose?

Cheers,

I think that is the dye from the coolant. It shows you where the leak is.

OK thanks - does that mean the pipe needs replacing? is the failure down to just wear and tear or is there anything else I should be aware of?

It looks like wear and tear, but to be sure pop the cap with the engine stone cold after overnight and check for pressurisation.

So I finally got around to checking it and there are no signs of pressurisation - is that a good thing? is it just the pipe that needs replacing?

Yes that's great it means it's just a leak at that joint do either the pipe or the tank but most likely pipe.
