Toyota Carina E 4A-FE How to tell if learn burn or not

As the tiltle tells. My version, a 1994 with the 85kw engine shows up as both lean and not lean in different parts catalogues(as in parts has often two choices for lean not lean). Is there a way to tell the difference? The ignition system is by Bosch and Motronic(ECU).

There is a site for Toyota cars, input the VIN and it will tell you if it was raining the day yours was knocked up!

Burnaston?... Likely raining lol

Thx for the suggestion.  But that one doesn't tell if it's lean or not.

Stand corrected, m8 sozz

I thought that the car 'spec' (lean burn, whatever) would be evident through the componentry that was built to your VIN.

Ah well - I used it to discover 101% of 'best price bin EBay' were offering 14" [spec] Front Discs against my Reg No.

This site gave me the correct Toyo P.No = Correct 13" [spec] discs, from my build VIN

Take a photo of the inlet manifold and injector location. If the fuel injectors are almost into the cylinder head, then lean burn. Also all leanburn engine cars have an econ light (which should work if the bulb has not blown). The engine should have dual coils, so that cylinders 1 & 4, and 2 & 3 share one each of the coils.

KC....

Will a VIN build check show this detail? (Agreed, you need to know what to look for!  )

Thank you very much. From your information I now know that I don't have a lean burn. Lack of dual coils was a dead give away. Mine has only one coil and no ignitor. What is strange is that I had to order the lean burn catalytic converter, the catalytic for no lean was not a fit at all.

NICE picture. It was a few years ago I sold my Carina E. I liked the 4A-FE engine. I had a leanburn engine and it was only rated to 79 kW. I would say that you have a non leanburn engine. The fuel manifold looks different than it did on my leanburn engine, This is an old picture and it is not good.

Hello,

writing from Bulgaria, just read your replies about guessing if the engine is a LB one.

I have the same issue with an Avensis 1998, tried with the VIN decoder and when I reach the ignition coil and spark plug

scheme it gives me to chose from 3 options, my 4AFE engine is with a single coil just like this in box 2  https://toyota-europe.epc-data.com/avensis/at220/3734/engine/1901/?frame_no=SB153ABN00E010686#2 . From what I read so far, this should be no LB engine, but standard 4AFE LINEA SOL.

Is it correct? Thanks
