1976 Toyota Crown performance?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm a first time poster here.

I've the opportunity to perhaps purchase a reasonably priced 1976 Toyota Crown with low (for it's age) mileage (100k klm).

The car has the 4M 2.6lt straight 6 with an auto box.

Before purchasing, I wanted to see if anyone here had any experience with them. The car drives well, but for one thing that concerns me: it was slow. Very slow.

Now, I'm not expecting this to be a performance car by any means, but the 6 cylinder felt low revving and sluggish. By comparison, my Mk1 Golf felt almost twice as quick off the mark. It could still maintain speed, but it felt slow enough for me to feel concerned enough to post here.

Does anyone know much about these cars? Are they naturally slow (I imagine they would weigh a lot)? Or, could the carb and fuel lines just need a tinker?

Any information is appreciated!

Many thanks,

MeltingDog
