Avensis key fob will lock but wont unlock

As per the title the key fob on my 2008 2.0 D4D Avensis will lock the car but wont unlock it.

With over 205K miles it has got alot of use.... never replaced the Battery in all this time so i will replace it first.

Could it be something else other than the fob Battery?

I opened it manually with the key alarm going off for 10 - 15 mins disconnected the (+ lead) on the Battery a few times and kept pressing unlock eventually it kicked in.

Fyi, If you had put the key in the ignition barrel & turned it the alarm would have silenced & if you lock the doors with the key then the alarm won't set.

Exact same thing happened again this morning.... open the door with the key alarm siren & horn was actived tried what you suggested.. i.e. turning the key in the ignition and it didnt silence the alarm siren or the horn.

After repeated pressing (for 15 mins or so) of the unlock bottom on the fob it finally unlocked.

The red led flashes when any three of the buttons are pressed so dont think its a Battery issue however ive just replaced the Battery as a first attempt to resolve this issue.

If its not the Battery how difficult is it to get another key? I guess its a trip to Mr T.... probably gonna be expensive too... anyone done this before?

TOYOTA

1. The vehicle should be in the following condition-
A. The key is NOT in-
serted in the ignition,
B. The driver's door IS open,
C. The driver’s door is
UNLOCKED.

2. Insert the Key into the ignition switch and then pull it out.

3. Press the Master Door Lock Switch  5 times from Lock to Unlock.

4. Close the Driver's door then open it.

5. Repeat step #3.

6. Now select the mode by inserting the key into the Ignition Switch and turning it to the "Run" or "On" position. The programming mode is determined by the amount of times you go from “key off” to the "key on" position and back before pulling the key out.

A. 1 time is the "Add" mode. This is used only on some models and it allows you to add a remote to the already existing remotes. The ECU confirms this by locking and unlocking the door locks automatically after you remove the key.

B. 2 times is the second mode which will erase all previously programmed remotes and allow you to program new ones. The ECU confirms this mode by locking and unlocking the door locks twice after you remove the key

C. 3 times is the third mode which tells you how many remotes are already programmed to the ECU. It confirms this locking and unlocking the door locks the amount of times applicable to the remotes coded. If no remotes are programmed then the ECU locks and unlocks the door locks 5 times. The ECU will hold up to 4 remotes at any one time.

7.  Press the Lock and Unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1.5 sec and then press either button by itself for 1 sec.

8. The ECU will perform the Lock/Unlock automatically to confirm that the 1st remote is stored by the ECU. Repeat step 7 immediately with another remote and continue until all remotes are registered.

9. Shut the driver’s door and try all remotes.

You could try this don't know if this would work or not.

No...Try and replace the Battery first. It happened to my Yaris and RAV4. WHen Battery is low, the light on the fob still lights up but the device probably detects low power so only allows locking of the car.

Two OP's posts reads he has replaced the Battery so maybe not that as he suspects?

Unlike the first generation Avensis which has the re-sync procedure in the owners manual, later versions may not or don't have this simple function. I had to use it after changing the batteries. One key was fine but the other needed to be synced. Later versions need a more complex procedure.

I also have a safe place for my spare keys, and I use one key then the other. This keeps wear down to a minimum and make sure the car and keys work properly. Same goes for the owners manual. I sold my '98 Avensis with two working keys and grey courtesy key, plus the owners manual, every MOT certificate and other paperwork. The cost of spare keys from Toyota is really high - they were lost and found a few times. My point is that it is important to have spare keys, in case the one of the keys totally fails.

I hope it gets sorted.
