abs, vsc, brake issues

HI

I have prius gen 2, 2008, t-spirit, had the front wheel hubs changed over 1.5 year ago.

When driving and braking to come to a full stop, i get a clunk noise as if the front driver's side wheel has slipped.  This was flagged up as the rh abs speed sensor in the techstream

I replaced it, but still getting the clunk noise very so often, but no dtc codes.

I have jacked the front of the car up , with ignition off and parking on ( one wheel at a time), and can rotate the wheel slight backwards and forwards.

I am thinking that maybe the hubs have gone?

Any thoughts or idea's?

thanks

Hi,

You are correct, it sounds very like the problem I had at around 120,000 miles with my 2009 Gen3. The wheel bearing eventually disintegrated, taking the wheel speed centre with it, throwing the corresponding fault code . This was on the nearside rear wheel.

I had plenty of warning, but because the car had a Toyota extended warranty, I waited until it broke, rather than having Toyota dismiss the claim as wear and tear. I don't recommend that for a front wheel if you value your safety.

We also had a front wheel bearing go on my original Gen 2 2008 T-Spirit, still in the family, at around the same mileage, although it had been noisy for many miles before it started knocking. We got it repaired by a trusted local garage, for massively less than Mr T charges.  That car carried on to 185,000 miles without any more problems.

thanks,

i thought that the hubs should have not gone, as i have only done about 20, 000 since i had them changed

I will look at getting some replacements

The other thing to check is the thin metal cover behind the brake disk. This more usually associates with squealing noises if a stone gets in. It doesn't really fit with your symptoms, but is easy to fix. See http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/89525-stones-in-brakes/.

The hub bearings won't cause a clunk when coming to a stop. I have never in 40 years of driving and fixing cars heard a wheel bearing knock, they growl, hum, buzz and eventually collapse, but knock ? no.

Possibilities that could, include: the brake caliper, or something on it, is loose (maybe even the pads), a driveshaft joint has excess play/wear in it or the nut has come loose on the hub end of the shaft, a broken spring, anti-roll bar bushes shot, loose or worn suspension bushes/joints.

problem is that if the dtc code come up as the rh abs speed sensor, the abs/vsc/brake indicator light is on and brakes still work ok but with out abs. But i don't get the knock when comming to a full stop.

only when i have cleared the dtc's codes and even then it random, no real pattern to when it happens.
