Am I getting ripped off?

Hello! Avensis newbie here looking for some help.

I bought an Avensis Diesel estate (2010) a couple of months ago and I love it! But after a few weeks I got some warning lights on the dash and the messages

"Check parking brake" and "Check VSC"

I contacted the dealer who eventually took my car back and they fitted a new EGR valve. Everything seemed okay for about a month and then the lights came back. So I contacted them again and eventually the took it back again they say they have cleaned out the Diesel Particulate Filter? When I picked it up, it drove for about 5 miles before the lights came back on again!!

Now they say that it must be the DPF sensors AND THEY ARE NOT COVERED BY MY WARRANTY!

So my question is..  Can a DPF sensor throw up two brake warnings? Or are the dealers as dodgy as I expect?

Thanks in advance for any help...

You don't say whether the car was bought from a Toyota dealer, or what warranty you have - Toyota or third party.

If it has been less than six months since you bought the car, and the car was bought from a dealer, then you have some rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. See 'The first six months' section of http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/regulation/consumer-rights-act

The rights apply to the dealer the car may have been bought from.

which engine & when built/registered. This affects whether it even has a DPF ;).

As Frosty says within the first 6 months of buying from a dealer/trader (not private sale) you have rights where the onus is largely on the dealer/trader. Having said that it is a 7 year old car so expectations of what you can reasonably expect also come into it.

Thanks for the replies guys.. I didn't get the car from a Toyota dealer and it's 2 litre D4 D engine. I'm pretty good with the legal side of things but I wanted to see if what they are saying holds water before going down that route.

With DPF's if the car has been driven mainly around town and not very far it can cause problems down the line.

I think though, as Frosty said, they need to sort it out. I wouldn't think a DPF fault can cause the brake lights to come on, so you may have two separate issues.

if it's the 1AD-FTV that didn't get a DPF in production for the UK market until something like October 2010.

I suspect you are also getting the Engine management warning light on ( see pic ) and this is the most significant light however as all the systems are so totally interconnected you also get VSC and Parking brake light warnings and these systems are being triggered by the EML and as these are both warning lights and text messages on the display many people regard these as more significant than the EML. What fault code is being found when the car is plugged in ?
