hi all

just got my avensis and was trying to find out what engines to avoid, as I am now having to change engine (if all else fails),someone told me I can get an engine that will be good so long as it did not have a letter U before the numbers on the block.

                             Help Graham

Hi Graham. Not being rude, you need to detail what Avensis you have - model, year, and engine type and size. It is hard to avoid an engine, unless it has been tested and certified. There need to be some documentation confirming it's origin, year, if has been updated.

The weaker engines are the diesel AD engines 2.0l and 2.2l with known head gasket issues, and the early 1ZZ vvti petrol engine with high oil consumption. The vvti oil consumption issue was sort mid 2005, plus not all early 1ZZ engines suffered high oil consumption. I think engine serial numbers have been quoted, but I cannot source that info. If the engine came from a scrapped car, the donor car must be a '06 plate onward to be safe.

The diesel engine not as straight forward. There are different versions of the engines.

When you detail the engine you are after, somebody will give the info you require.

I did not know he had been advised to detail his car before. Without any information, nobody can give any response to a vague question. That is why I gave a general response.
