Howdy, Happy Friday

I have had my '11 IQ since he was only 42m old and aside from brakes and tyres it seems he is now poorly for the first time:sad:

I had his A/C re-gassed Aug '16 and used it every few weeks to keep the tubes lubricated.  Sometime in May '17 i used A/C  and it was no longer cold, today (June '17) i had it re-gassed  twice (first pass reported that it needed more oil) however, it now still blows warm (well, not cold).

It looks as if the compressor is not spinning and the engine tone does not change when the A/C switch in the cabin is activated.

I have checked a 10a fuse in the passenger foot well (No 3) and looked in the 2 engine bay fuse boxes, the passenger side fuse box states that the fuse is shared with the windows and wipers and they do not have a problem.

The engineer thinks that the only other part left is the relay but i cannot locate which this will be, the fuse boxes are labelled in abbreviation.

I phoned Toyota as i hoped they would help however, the guy said that there are two relays related to A/C, one is £55 and the other £74, way too expensive for me to purchase as a diagnostic. He wouldnt give me the part No's so i cannot even order any generics for diagnoses as i cannot locate what relays these may be.

Are any of you IQ'ers able to advise?

I went to toyota-tech.eu but the guides are chargeable which, if its only £3 for an hr then that would be ok but i dont even know if i would understand them.

Thank you

The diagnostic for the Manual Air-con is a series of questions and 'Click Here' respones, so there is no point of screen shoting it.But I will if you think it will help.

LOL, no worries. Is yours the Auto or Manual? Perhaps I should have asked earlier :wine:

Hi Soeley

You are a font of info! Auto is fine for me thank you as that is what i have, i had no idea that there was an accessible diagnostics available.

Certainly a number of things for me to try tomorrow and i have found some IQ relays on eBay for circa £10 if i need them.

Thanks for taking the time to help me

I have the Auto as well having the 1.33. To tell the truth I didn't know the on-board diagnostics were available until half an hour ago.

Good luck.

Hmmm, OK, in the engine bay the pic above suggests that the two circled items below are for A/C, would you happen to know what else may use the 40amp relay?

This is the Fuse and relays that the pic is referring to.

I had seen some vids about Toyotas in general failing the Magnetic Clutch Relay (MG-CLT was the code in the video) but i could not locate any refs to that in an IQ and here it is.

Would be handy to know which Relay code that was as must be one of those in the pic of the fuse box

How much gas was put in? Have you tried blipping the throttle while idling with AC turned on?

Howdy puppies

I took my IQ to a garage guy with a computer yesterday and he was able to turn the A/C on via the laptop Control Panel so it appears to demonstrate that mechanically all is ok.  His suspicion is that the Gas is an incorrect pressure and so the Pressure Switch is not allowing it to activate.

He did clear some errors beforehand (as we could not locate the A/C options in the Control Panel as they appeared as blank boxes so we missed them at first).

It is puzzling when i saw the Kwik fit guy start the re-gas process twice (as first time it stopped as it wanted to use more oil to seal the pipes) so i can only imagine its too much pressure in there now (unless their guide books are wrong regarding the pressure required)

Can you explain what you were told about the first time stopping because it needed more oil to seal pipes? The operator sets the machine for oil, it would only stop if the machine is out of oil or a vacuum leak if detected.

Hi

Well, i returned to Kwik Fit and complained that the A/C wasnt working and they only regassed it Oct 2016, i asked if he could check my relays.

He plugged in the A/C machine and advised that it reported only 35PSI and set it to proceed.

The process removes all existing gas, pressure tests to check for leaks and then blows new oil through to lubricate the parts before blowing in the gas.

As this is a programmed cycle it stopped before the regassing stage and reported it needed more oil, this meant that he started the whole process again and the second time it progressed to the end.

I hope that helps

The need for more oil should relate to the machine and not the car surely? As in it doesn't have enough oil on the bottle to fill the car. You only need about 20ml anyway. How long was vacuum carried out? You need a minimum of 45mins. The machine can only measure how much oil it removes and then puts back in the same amount plus however much is manually set. The leak test is a vacuum hold for a few minutes so the negative gauge will zero if a leak is on the system. This is not a guarantee of potential leaks on the system.

35PSI (2.4BAR?), assuming with AC off and on high pressure is half of what you would expect. During operation you should be seeing 15BAr pressure on the high side at 1500rpm, blowers on full and set to coldest temp on cabin.

There is a more involved way to do the AC regas to get the correct pressure if the machine scales are out. That would require a specialist though.

I had an issue with IQ when I bought it. It needed to be vacuumed for 1 hour just remove the moisture which was effecting its performance. I also found I had to blip the throttle during idle to get the AC to kick in. After 2 regasses it started to work fine and behaved normally. Still works now.
