Aygo 2016 Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Recommended Posts

I recently noticed that the yellow indicator for an inflated tire on my 2016 Aygo's dashboard was on and had the tire pressure checked - indeed, one of them was at about 26 instead of the 33 recommended by Toyota. I filled it up and reset the indicator.

This made me wonder how the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) works; is there a sensor in each one of the wheels or tires that checks for correct pressure (or imbalance of the car)? So if I change the tire (or wheel?) for some reason, do I have to make sure that the new tire (wheel?) also has a sensor fitted?

Aygo has no sensor in the tire.

As far as I'm aware the Aygo uses an indirect tyre pressure monitoring system, where the brake speed sensors detect when the diameter of a wheel differs from the norm. A smaller diameter indicates a loss of pressure.

Makes sense and probably cheaper to incorporate too.

As usual, when I find out about a feature like this on the Mark 2 Aygo, I have a check to see if us Mark 1 owners can fit something similar.  As an after market item, they seem a bit dear for what they are:

I really like the Speed Limiter feature on the new Aygo but I don't think that I'll be bothering with one of these.....I'm still a tight Northener at heart.

It amazes me though, that features like this, in a few very short years, have become not only standard or within an option pack but either expected or the norm......I remember when a car radio was an option!!!

Progress, eh?

Tyre pressure monitoring systems became compulsory within the EU on all new cars first registered from November 2014, and a faulty system became an MOT failure from January 2015.

The speed limiter is a positive addition to the safety of a vehicle. Unfortunately, I personally think TPMs go toward owner's neglecting the condition of their tyres. I check my tyre pressures manually once a week, and check for condition and any foreign objects stuck in the rubber at the same time.

A TPMS could make a driver think, hey, the system shows ok, so tyres must be good..... But poor rubber condition and objects stuck in the tyre, could cause a catastrophic failure sometime in the future.

Yet another costly thing to worry about come MOT time

Extended warranties on modern cars are looking to be quite good value lol.

Sounds like a similar system to my current Mazda, which works by the ABS sensors. However if all tyres (or maybe even only two tyres on one 'axle'?) were losing pressure there wouldn't be any difference in rolling radius so the system probably wouldn't kick in.
