Just got myself a 2012 Avensis. Got off to a bad start having bought it from a second car garage, the car having problems, but working through them.

The car seems very good (small problems aside).

If you bought from a trader you have rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. e.g. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/content/advice/how-does-the-consumer-rights-act-protect-you-when-you-buy-a-car

Yes I do, and I've been arguing with them for two days. The problem is I like the car and apart from sorting out this problem, I think it's OK. They are paying for the part, but I've got to put in a days labour to do the work. It's a long story as ever, but once the part is replaced I'll be paying Toyota main dealer to give it a full health check. It should be fine as I re-MOT'ed it the day I got it and it passed, so that's two MOT's in two days with two different garages 200 miles apart, passed both times :-)

Might be worth asking your Toyota dealer about the Toyota Extended Warranty (assuming that it is under 100k miles & has a full service history to Toyota time/mileage). They have been doing a "2 years for the price of 1" promotion which may still be on & this also includes 2 years Toyota Roadside Assistance (handled by the AA atm).
