Vapour lock?

I have a 2006 diesel Avensis (cam belt model).

I have trouble starting.

Starter motor turns over fine but will not bite. Not so bad starting when cold. Worse when engine hot or on a hot day. This is why I thought it may be vapour lock.

Recently had new fuel filter and air filter (though problem existed before they got changed)

Any ideas? I read somewhere I could cool the starter motor by pouring water on it or wrapping it in aluminium foil to stop it warming up.. Assuming it is vapour lock. I am reluctant to try these primitive methods!!

Has anyone else had this problem?

Many thanks

Have you primed the fuel filter? The scv could be going bad as could the starter

I haven't primed the fuel filter but it was changed last month (by Toyota) during a service and I had the same problem before and after.

Had a read on Pistonheads' and someone has suggested Crank sensor, MAP sensor, starter motor or high resistance in the cabling to the starter.

Do you have any thoughts on these please? It turns over fast so it's not Battery or alternator, but it just won't take - engine shaking as it tries hard however!

It appears to be getting worse too. Should I have checked the glow plugs?

Thanks for the advice by the way.

PS. By far the most recognisable symptom is failure to start when engine hot.

Having read a little more, it never stalls either so not sure it's the CPS (..and not sure engine heat affects this anyway).

MAP failure appears to generate an engine light, of which there are none (..and not sure engine heat affects this anyway).
