upper hatch wiring grommet removal

when you open the boot on the channel where the hatch hinges are, on the left hand side there is the rubber boot that carries the wires from the car body to the hatch, the top part is just rubber and easy to take off but the bottom part has a plastic insert with two flimsy clips, does anyone know how to remove this grommet without damaging the clips?

i think you would either put two thin strips of credit car plastic under the rubber and depress both clips or maybe peel off the rubber from the bottom and then push the tabs in with a screwdriver with just the plastic part and put the plastic back in the rubber after for refitting ?

any help appreciated   thanks
