Hi,

So I have recently brought a manual 2006 Hilux, which is now creating a loud engine drone/ vibration.

It happens under load, between 1500 - 2000 rpm, only in gears 3, 4 and 5. It is the worse in 4th gear.

I have taken it to my mechanic, and he thought it would be the engine mounts, so I have replaced them, where nothing was resolved. Ive also recently had the diesel injectors replaced. I have had all new oil in the difs but the vibration is still there?

Does anyone have any idea where this vibration could be coming from??

Hi Reece, if it only happens when in either 3rd, 4th and 5th that would suggest it is a gearbox problem or a bearing problem in the drive train, either one in the gearbox or wheel bearings.  As the vehicle picks up speed as the various parts pick up speed, and usually noises that cannot be heard at lower speeds indicate one of these things are at fault. Hi Mike,

I also forgot to mention that it happens when I put into 4wd in second gear as well. Im not sure that makes any difference?

As soon as 2000rpm hits, the vibration will stop, and wont be heard again no matter what the speed is, unless the revs are between 1500 - 2000 rpm.

The noise/ vibration will get louder the more i push the pedal to the floor. lightly pressing the pedal will result in little or no vibration.

Hi Reece. It sounds to me you need to go to a garage that specialises in gearbox/drive train problems as they can put it on a ramp as it's much easier to hear a noise from underneath than from the drivers seat. Of course they will give you their free advise hoping to get some work from it then it's up to you if you give them the job or just tell them you'll take it away whilst you think about it once they start giving you estimates what they would want to fix it. Giving a diagnosis about noises from a computer is hard work, from being to hear it is much easier.......my suggestion is probably cheaper rather than you keep doing jobs that probably don't need doing, basically you get a free fault diagnosis and if you can do the job and don't mind getting dirty you can do it yourself of course you can give them the job if it's too much for you. You don't need a Toyota dealer to give the advise just Google to find a local transmission place that's close to where you live. Mike.

Any update what the problem was, l have the exact same problem with my Hilux?

I haven't been able to solve the vibration but I believe that it is coming from the gearbox. I have disconnected the rear drive shaft and tested it using the four wheel drive and it still vibrates. I am now learning to live with it. It would appear to only affect manual gearboxes. Good luck, should you be able to identify the cause could you let me know please.

Regards, Kevin

I have a 1998 KZTE Prado and doing the same thing, one person said after many years of struggling it was due to a non OEM clutch kit that cause the vibration, then another ex Toyota person said it will cost you alot to sort out but it is mainly due to old age off diesel engine and total lack of power before turbo kicks in. He said new OEM engine mounts only and upgrade exhaust  pipe to a 3inch unit and bigger baffle will reduce vibration with about 50%

I will do m y engine mounts first due to old age then exhaust system and will update.

Hi All,

I have a 2018 Land Cruiser (EU model) and I have this also. Researching it seems it is a well known Toyota problem of a droning noise at 1500-2000 rpm and is caused by a resonance created by the air turbulence, between the inner wing and the inner mud guard, as the air cleaner draws air in...
