even if they look and dont think it is anything, i will have it on my service paperwork so they cant say they were not warned if it fails in the future, i am thinking it is the alternator and not the chain cam which is a relief as the noise is right where the alternator is and when i opened the oil cap without it running the chain is further to the right and the big vvti wheel is on the left

Rather than try to solve the issue yourself, if you're concerned about the noise/timing chain, the car is still under warranty so book it into a Toyota dealer for some investigation. Take a recording of the noise and get the service department to listen to it. The warranty is there to correct any manufacturing defects!!

@monkeydave - I *highly* recommend you bring a copy of that recording with you so you can show it to them because Toyota are generally useless for this sort of thing unless you really push them to look at it; 9 times out of 10 they will either say they couldn't reproduce the problem or that it is normal and nothing to worry about it, unless you can show it to them so clearly they can't just brush it aside.

Already suggested.

I know mine is a Mk 2, but its always had the problem of chirping serpentine belt noise when started from cold, and this ( I think its related to this anyway) also makes a strange clunking  / chattering noise from the pulley area when driving the car at low revs usually after changing up a gear and slightly lugging the engine between 1000 and 2000 RPM, but this is only till the engine warms up and then the noise stops. I think there is a slightly noisy idler pulley with a little bit of play on it on the serpentine belt drive, and its this pulley that's causing the problems with belt alignment, because I changed the drivebelt (but not the pulley) but the problem remained afterwards. I suggest maybe check the pulleys for any side play, as when the engine warms up, the play would reduce and the noise goes away. I've heard of more Mk 2's having this problem with belt chirp when cold, and short of replacing the 2 idler pulleys and belt, I just put up with the noise, until. its getting much worse or the pulley shears off, in which case, I will definitely know the culprit. My car has a very low mileage on it of just 25K miles, and it was making the belt noises even before it had done 20K miles when I acquired it. I doubt that the noise would be coming from the timing chain.

My mother has a 64 plate Mk 3 1.33 Icon, and hers does not make any chirping or shh-shhh noises when starting from cold as yet, but I will be listening out for it in the future.

  • 1 month later...

just an update, the car is book in to be looked at in a few weeks with its first service but here are a couple of better videos i did for the mechanic as the noise goes away after 10 mins, on the second one i go over the engine where the timing chain is, i just hope it is the cluch pulley bearings on the alternator or the tension pulley bearings and not the timing chain

cheers guys
