They want £255.00 for my wife’s 3 year old Aygo with 11,000 on the clock, that’s a years fuel for her, what’s the point of buying a economical car when they stuff you with a service price like this, anyway it’s off to my mechanic £120 all in.

I got a bit fed up with the constant dodging in conversations with them.

You need a Aircon service... why.... to keep it in tip top condition.... it’s working I don’t service my fridge?... but if it breaks it’s not covered under warranty....

So if I don’t have it serviced it’s out of warranty.... well technically we would have to look at it.

It will affect the trade in price....

I mate of mine sold his car to a dealer who promptly sold it with a full dealer service history, even thought he serviced it himself.

Nurturing Fear is the main driving force in the service department.

£255 obviously isn't for a service plan, which is the subject of the topic, but the price of Toyota's Full service under their Fixed Price Servicing scheme - https://www.toyota.co.uk/owners/service-mot-maintenance/ - costs of which are openly advertised on the website, so shouldn't come as any surprise.

Toyota servicing for the Aygo is every 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever occurs first. So presumably, if you're saying the car is only now having a Full service done at 3 years/11,000 miles, then should a warranty repair be required which is dependent on correct servicing, you may have difficulty getting the warranty claim accepted. Similarly, if servicing is done outside the dealer network during the new car warranty period, the onus will be on the customer to prove the car has been serviced according to manufacturer requirements.

One can always say 'no' to additional work such as air con servicing.

Servicing outside a dealer network usually means that, if an out of warranty repair is needed for which one seeks a goodwill contribution from the manufacturer, goodwill is denied.

As always the choice of where to have cars serviced is down to the customer, but answers such as the effect on a warranty isn't always a straight 'yes or no'.

On the Air Con question (this is a bit OT but I'll bring it up), does the basic warranty of a car cover the air con to work correctly over the lifetime of the warranty?

In other words would a 5 year old Toyota or 7 year old KIA (that had been correctly serviced) and that had failing A/C performance due to it needing a regas have that work done free of charge or would the A/C be treated as a 'consumable' part like brake pads  and tyres and be chargeable.

I Agree it is a choice, a service plan for this car broken down gives the figure of £255 incorporated into the plan for a full service.

Manufacturers dealers shops will try to wiggle out of any warranty claim, we all gear up for a fight when warranty is mentioned.

I’ve made my decision and after 3 years it’s going to my mechanic, it originally had a service plan for £13 per month then 3 years later it jumped the near £30 per month [emoji848] no.

If your saying that even though it was serviced under a service plan for 3 years since new in accordance with Toyota service schedule that I would have difficulty with a warranty claim because it’s only just having a full service, then that seals the deal to walk.

According to the service manager if you have it serviced every year it’s covered, if not they’ll have a look at it if it fails.
Which surprised me as you would expect it to be covered, but he was treating it as a separate service.

Just another wriggle out.

It does beg the question, as I say fear selling.

 

On my Auris hybrid service, on top of the £165.00 they wanted £60 for tracking, £30 for fuel treatment, £30 for a pollen filter.

 

Then I got “if the ventilation system fails it may not be covered if the pollen filters blocked and causes a problem.

As your post wasn't clear what servicing the car had had, hence my reply.

£165 would have been an interim service, where a pollen filter isn't included. Adjustment of tracking is usually at extra cost whichever marque the car is. Fuel treatment is a common offering from dealers, not just Toyota, and one can chose whether or not to have it.

As regards air con, most manufacturers cover regassing under the new car warranty for a limited period. However, if an air con service is done, this may come with a warranty. For example, we had our i20's air con serviced last year, and that came with a two year warranty.

Most of this is about ensuring one knows what is covered and what isn't under servicing.

It would be covered for a mechanical failure as long as that wasn't caused by a improper use/maintenance imo. A regas at normal intervals (usually 2 years+) would not be free - it is similar to changing your oil for your engine (indeed suspended oil in the system lubricates it).

If you fail to maintain something that you are required to under warranty conditions & that then causes consequential damage then usually that damage is not covered.

£165 interim, no pollen filter included, only oil and oil filter !? It’s a bit an expensive. 

Oil and filter cost £30, air filter around £10 and a pollen filter £10, total a £50 plus half an hour labour. Fuel treatment is £4-10, air con re gas and lubrications £60-80, spark plugs £35 set, Wiper Blades £15, my point is that if you can’t service it yourself for some reason, you can get it done by a mobile mechanic or trusted local garage and with the rest of the money buy aftermarket warranty that wil cover almost everything as long as the car been regularly serviced and service book stamped, and you will probably save some cash for the local pub. Also if you prefer to use genuine Toyota parts there are some Toyota dealers outlets on eBay that offer parts at discounted prices and fast and free delivery, no argument guys, just sharing my thoughts may help someone. I personally will visit dealers only when the car is brand new and until paid off or in case of any warranty or recall work.

I would have thought that 4l of decent brand 0W20 & a decent brand air filter is going to cost you at least that & quite possibly/probably more.

There are a lot of inspections in the service as well as oil & filter replacements & on a hybrid it includes your "free" Hybrid Health Check.

If the car is serviced to Toyota stipulated schedule/parts quality by a competent person (usually adjudged as a VAT registered garage/mechanic) you don't need the aftermarket warranty as the manufacturer's warranty will cover it. What you will probably lose though is manufacturer's goodwill should there be something where that may come into consideration.

Compared to other Japanese marques, Toyota servicing is competitively priced.

For cars outside the new car warranty Toyota, as with other marques, offer reduced price servicing under their Essenital Care scheme - eg for the Auris a silver service costs £120 and a gold £200.

As with any service, the majority of the service consists of checking items rather than replacing items, and this applies across manufacturers and to independents.

In the case of extended warranties, often the warranty company will require servicing by a VAT registered garage. Extended warranties are not covered by Block Exemption, so manufacturers and warranty companies can legally stipulate who should service a vehicle whilst covered by the extended warranty. In the case of Toyota extended warranties, servicing has to be done within the Toyota dealer network - although the Essential Care scheme may be used. 

In my opinion, nobody needs to be surprised by the cost of Toyota servicing - details of what is included within each service and costs have been available on the Toyota website for a number of years (https://www.toyota.co.uk/owners/service-mot-maintenance/servicing?ds_rl=1253313&gclid=EAIaIQobChMImO-7gKHh4AIVhfhRCh0AjAUpEAAYAyAAEgJvHfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds). 

Aside from that, when we have purchased new cars, and over the years we've purchased 21 new cars from a variety of Japanese/Korean manufacturers, servicing costs have been discussed before any order has been placed, and really, this should be part of anyone's discussion with a dealership when buying a car, whether new or used.

Correct, my post mostly applies to cars 5 years old and over where warranties, dealer servicing and good will in case of something goes wrong are not necessary.

Not necessarily the case. Some owners prefer the protection of an extended warranty, and as the Toyota new car warranty is currently 5 years/100,000 miles in the UK, extended warranties are only applicable when a vehicle is over five years old.

As regards goodwill, recent cases of Toyota offering contributions towards the cost of out of warranty repairs include the AD diesel engine oil consumption/head gasket issues where Toyota offered goodwill repairs for up to 7 years/111,846 miles from first registration, and complete resprays under goodwill of certain white Toyota IQ's over five years old which had evidence of paint flaking off, etc.

My auris is still in the 5 year warranty period but I enquired to Toyota regarding the cost of an extended warranty. For a 1 year warranty (unlimited mileage) it would cost £595. The 12v Battery is not covered in the extended warranty and if the exhaust fails due to 'corrosion issues', this is also not covered. 

Being aware of what is or isn't covered is an important issue. Toyota have an 8 page document specifically for their extended warranty. As a former technician I know where garages can make their profits. Brake pad changes even when there is still around 50% of pad material left, wheel allignment - a 10-15 minute process which often doesn't require adjustment of the steering rack. Brake fluid changes - some garages only siphon fluid from the master cylinder and then replace with fresh fluid. The correct method would be to remove wheels and then extract fluid directly through the brake calipers. 

It all depends on your own position whether you want or need an extended warranty or not. Personally I won't be paying £595 to Toyota and will service and maintain my car myself unless some specialist diagnostic work is needed.

Toyota were doing 2 years for the price of 1 on their extended warranties, which, taking account of the included two year roadside assistance, was good value.
