Hi guys, i have a 2003 1.6 petrol Corolla, im starting to get a bad popping rattle when going over bumps and pot holes, took it to Kwickfit, they put it on the ramp and told me, the heat shield in the middle (near fuel tank) is corroded badily and gone all rusty, even its broken off near 2 of the bolts and has been holded up by a plastic trim holding cable, but still rattles upon a shake. When driving, it feels like the popping rattle is coming from the rear left passenger side however there was nothing spotted lose or wrong there, could it just be that that the heat shield rattle sound just travels in that direction?

Can anyone suggest what i can do? Is it possible to get this part from dealer? Or would it be a scrap yard search? Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Can't help you with where the sound's coming from, but sound can be deceptive as to where it originates, and can travel through the body.

My Corolla's similar age to yours, and about a year ago I found one of the legs (offside) of the heat shield had rusted through (not bad enough to rattle).  Sounds like yours is more seriously corroded, but FWIW, I repaired mine using a bit of thin sheet metal, bending it into shape, pop rivetted to the heat shield, and refixed to body underside using original bolt.  May be OTT, but I made up a dummy run bracket in thin cardboard first.  Even so, the metal one differed slightly, to do with the bending, but it works

That shield rattles at the best of times, found that putting something between the shield and tank stops most of the rattle, given the legs are ok.

Have you checked with Mr. T  to see how much a new ones cost ?   - wasting your time with a 10 +  year old second hand one from a scrappers.

You also have shields around the exhaust near the engine and under the body, so worth checking them.
