Help with naming part?

Hello,

I have a Toyota Yaris 2003 T2 model and today out of nowhere the car started revving itself continuously. I have had a look at the motor and have taken this part/sensor off and the car is back to normal. So my questions are;

1) From the picture attached, can anyone tell me what part this is so I can look into fixing it?

2) Is it dangerous to drive without this attached?

3) Is it cheap/easy to fix?

1/ Mass Air Flow Sensor.

2/ Not sure it's dangerous to drive but I would imagine the engine warning light is illuminated and I would have thought idle speed will be erratic.

3/ Sensors can be purchased for less than £50.(They can also be cleaned with care as they're fragile).

Have you checked the accelerator cable to see if it's sticking? And what made you disconnect the MAF sensor?

Thank you for the quick reply.

I have tested the accelerator cable, all fine and secure. No problems there. My dad and I had a quick look to see what the problem is, thinking it was countless other issues but instead we tried this to which it worked. With this sensor removed the car stopped revving itself and went back to normality, driving like previously. Any idea why?

At least it is a cheap sensor, around £25.

Again, thank you for the reply. I will have to drive without it for the time being until the weekend. Hopefully, nothing bad happens.

Have you tried plugging it back in to see if the fault returns?

Yes, I have, the problem still remains. The problem is that even without the sensor, it is still erratic. So must be another fault.

My advice to you is to take it to someone who knows what they're doing, it'll be cheaper in the long run!

MAFs sit in the airstream  going to the engine. They work by passing a current through a wire.The wire heats up and its resistance rises... The more air that passes through ,the cooler the wire is and the lower its resistance.

In time the air  deposits dirt on the wire and its temperature rises so the resistance does too.. so the system thinks there is less air flowing than actually is.Almost certainly your car with no MAF will use more fuel and fail its MOT on emissions...
