I have just taken my 2012 1.8 t27 tourer in to the main dealer  again, for a noise [a sort of friction noise] when the car is hot, and under load ,[when pulling away on an incline.] This is the third time I have been in with it and still they say no fault found ... They have checked the clutch and all is fine.. I have asked the question on here before ..its been doing this for nearly 5 yrs...and the general feeling was aux drive belt .  I have noticed that the belt is black and very dirty on the ribbed side ,like brake dust. but they say the belt is ok .  ....Thanks for any advice .[ Total mileage 19,500 miles ]  and purchased new.

When your warranty expires, they will tell you which will come from your pocket.

Do a video of the noise and show them. If they claim that noise is normal, get it in writing. Then take the car somewhere else for a 2nd opinion. If the other garage find something, bring that info to Toyota and tell them to fix it under warranty and cover the charges for the other garage. Would work here in Norway at least.

I have the same car though 3 years older. The belt on mine is fine, and I carry a spare with the tools in case it breaks. I would take it back to the dealer or get a second opinion from a competent mechanic. One of the pulleys could be misaligned, idler puller sticky, the water pump or air-con has a problem.

Another poster had a problem which I suspect was a leaking water pump - the belt was stained brown. May not be same problem, but the car is the same year!

Unfortunately the video is missing.

The belt should be mostly drive and not too dirty. Check the air-con for changes in noise. I would remove the belt and check play on all the pulleys. Air-con pulley, the idler pulley and water pump pulley should spin quietly and smoothly. The alternator pulley has a freewheel in one direction!

Look at engine mounts, and hoses and cables not touching sometime. I inspected my under panel during an oil change, and replaced any broken or missing bolts or panel clips whilst under the car. My car had the clutch replaced a few months back.

Hopefully you will get to the source of the noise.
