Hi Guys,

Great site! been very helpful, however i signed up today as i need some help and where better to get it than from the guys who now their cars inside out and upside down.

I recentky bought a 2008 2.0 D4D estate. beautiful car to drive. it has 117k miles on it. I test drove it twice and all was perfect. no noises, drove beautifully and pulls like a train. However, 2 weeks later and 300 miles, it is now make a very worrying metal grating noise and there is small metal shavings in the oil filter. Has anyone come across this before? any ideas where to start looking?

Thanks Guys

Perhaps timing chain problem such as tensioner has failed, or bolts in top sprocket loose, timing chain scraping on casing making grating noise and shaving metal off which gets circulated in the oil and trapped in the filter ?

If it has bits of metal in the oil then the more it is run the more damage will be done so it would be best to have it looked at, if you bought the car from a dealer then you should be able to take it back to them.

Thanks Kennycab, i did buy from a dealer, car hasn't been used since filings were discovered. Weirdly, the grating noise disappears with any increase in revs. Having it looked at Monday, so fingers crossed its something simple
