Slow starting Rav 4

Hello

Looking for some advice regarding our Rav 4. We have only owned the car for 2 months and it has been slow starting since we bought it. All seems to be fine once the car has started.

The Battery has been replaced by the garage under warranty but doesn't seemed to have helped the issue and they have put the labored start down to it being an older 04 plate car with 100k on the clock.

What else could cause a slow start besides a Battery on its way out?

Thank you!

Hi, if the starter motor is wearing out then this would cause slow cranking. Mike.

Yeah. Sound's like a Lazy starter motor Beth. And pure nonsense for a garage to say an older car wit 100k etc etc. Good luck wit ur new motor. Oh and get ur starter motor repaired , better than buying second hand starter's. And I think if it is the starter motor, it wud not b good for ur new Battery.

Hello Beth and welcome to the club. the above answers cover a slow turn over when trying to start. Is it possible you mean that it is being slow on the starter or that you have to keep the key turned all the way longer than you would expect before it fires up. A poor turn over can be caused by a lower  voltage reaching the starter by loose connections on the thick cable running from the Battery to the starter and also loose or dirty connections on either end of the earth cable

Thank you for your replies! The garage apparently replaced the starter motor however when we wen't to pick the car up there was no marked difference in the starting capability. After taking it for a short drive there was a plinking sound and the car started spewing copious amounts of black smoke!
