Check engine light and fumes smell

Hi guys

So today my check engine light came on just as I was getting home from work. About 2 hours later I had to take my dad to the airport and on the way we could both smell gas/fumes in the car. Any idea on what could be causing this? Don't think it's a coincidence that the check engine light and gas smell started on the same day.

A side note, I've smelt gas/fumes in my car before but that was only when I had the heater on in the car during winter time. Not sure if it's related at all.

As you leave us to guess the engine size and petrol or diesel, I can only suggest..

Car  not serviced, serviced incorrectly

Blocked air filter.blocked fuel filter, 

Failed seals around boot.

Leaking (rusty) fuel filler pipe.

 

But I am not a clairvoyant.
