Assuming its a standard European spec car any fault code reader should work. The protocols were standardised in the EU from 2001 onwards for petrols and 2004 onwards for diesels.

I have had Launch Creader Viii (CRP129) for 2 years since owning my 1.8 Vmatic TR Tourer. It cost about £180 at the time and covers nearly every car made since OBD2 and does ABS/SRS/steering angle/live data and a few other things. I get free updates. It has paid for itself though it could not find the true cause of the EPB message! That needed a really pro system, which pinned it down to a disconnected gear position sensor. I had to remove the air filter and piping to the throttle body to get to the gearbox for that! The launch did know the fault was there though.

The Foxwell NT 510 is good, but manufacturer specific. It can store up to 5 manufacturers, but it does not cover every manufacturer like Renault and cost quite a bit for each one! But the function list is actually better than the Launch, so it is worth it. Only Techstream (hacked version) would be better!!

The techstream would of probably cost less than £30 that's with the vcm and software.you can also go on to other car forums for the newer software updates for free.

Toyota actually post the latest version of Techstream on line free. https://www.toyota-tech.eu/GTS/Wizard/Step5-Software.aspx

It's the activation licence that costs albeit you can buy that daily, weekly monthly etc. https://www.toyota-tech.eu/GTS/Wizard/Step6.aspx

Is that update compatible with the Chinese clone vcm?

it probably depends which clone you have. What it isn't, is a cracked version of the software so you would need to pay for activation.
