Can I start a campaign for better usage of English on this forum? A lot of posts are poorly written, with basic spelling and grammar mistakes that would fail the 11+ exam. Txt spk mks msgs hrd 2 read, if u no wot I mean m8.

Im game for that mate. as most of the text speek i dont actually understand. being quite an old duffer. i dont use text. correct me if im wrong but aint phones supposed to be used for speaking to people or is the art of conversation slipping into the past so the only words we will be able to utter in twenty years time will be uggggg

Posted

yeah, I'm in agreement, all that text speak is really difficult to read..

Also, people trying to 'type street' or something is really irritating!

Posted

yeah lets go for it granted when your trying to type fast sometimes spelling aint that good but i try and avoid text speak!

never noticed any spelling issues with your posts? and i dont think this thread is aimed at the odd misspelt word..

My issue is more with the delibrate mis-spelling, Im an old git and it takes me longer to read a text post than normal english...

And i think thats the key thrust of what people are saying..

wat ya is on a bout m8's, I is alrite wit it, it's gr8 ( Sorry that should have been all in caps)

Fair do's I dont do text speak, but s'pose I do speak Cumbrian english too, so its a minor mirracle anyone understands me :lol::lol:

as for spelling I find its not to bad, but speaking like a muppet gets very tedious, ie. it woz ded gud!!

So I guess once I had read the post properly I appologise for my missguided previous post, it was a little adverserial and I have now contemplated re-reading the previous prose to further understand the complexity of the situtation and whole heartedly agree!!!:rolleyes:

i fink wot you is tryin to do is take away mah individualidy innit, speakin like dis iz ded gud cus you all fink i am blingin gangsta innit!

Unfortunately mate, it's an impossible task to regulate grammar on a forum - people will 'type' how they want, and all though i don't mind a couple of abreviations.... in the words of alan partridge it can get 'saaaaaaaaaaaaa-aaaaaaaaaa-aaaaaaaaaaaad'

as mods we dont correct grammer or spelling, although sometimes it seems like a good idea.

im ever so slightly dislexic, sometimes i swap letters round the wrong way without noticing! but its still legible as far as im concerened.

id like to see the spelling alot better and if folk did a quick 'proof read' of the post it would make thinks a lot easier to read.

ALSO DONT USE CAPS! IT GETS ON PEOPLES NERVES AND YOU DONT READ THE WORDS YOU YOU JUST LOOK AT THEM AND GLANCE ACROSS!

also it helps if ppl use proper punctuation and paragraphs at times. caps at the start arnt too bad when missed but the odd full stop and line change do wonders!

read this again and youll see!

but at the end of the day we cant force people to do this, its a case of taking the matter personally and just watch what your doing.

/me az finish now innit l8terz :!Removed!:

I'm actually in the process of organising an English class for another forum of which i am a member. Granted, I'm an American, I did learn to write ENGLISH English, because i went to a private school taught primarily by older British ladies.

I would not be opposed to the idea, provided it didn't blame the American members for the problem! :P

America are to blame though really, specifically gangsta-rap hip-hop gun culture, of which I must say i'm a fan...

however when word replacements such as 'da' for 'the' are used by american hiphop artists... it sounds cool, but when the same logic is applied by british accents, it sounds decidedly uncool...

I can live with abreviations... but I don't see why spelling 'was' as 'woz' for example, is any less effort to type than the original... what's the point?

I think someone touched on the point of it being 'street', is this the case? let's hear from some of the offenders :D

gangsta man, innit!

and that's all I have to say on this subject.

I'm all for the correct use of English, standards are slipping everywhere.

I recommend everyone read 'Eats, shoots and leaves' it's very good and funny too.

It's mainly about bad punctuation, for instance:

eats, shoots and leaves

and

eats shoots and leaves

the comma makes all the difference, it could be about a panda's diet or about a someone with a gun!

Spelling can easily be rectified. I always type my posts in word which I just have permanently minimised in the background – I then let word do the spell check and copy and paste the text into my post.

me too

and I will repeat what I said to daves original post...

this thread isnt aimed at the odd misspelt word, or odd grammatical mistake...

the issue is more with the delibrate mis-spelling, this 'text speak', and 'street jive' which make it impossible for 1/2 the forum to actually understand what is being said...

Posted

I agree

Having said that, I'm a Geordie so no :censor: understands me anyway :P :lol:

I am actually quite surprised at the replies to my original post. I was expecting for many to disagree with me mildly, or worse!

Quite makes you feel that there's hope for the English language after all, doesn't it?

I do text a lot on my mobile and use all the abbreviations. Not bad for someone who hits half a century in October! There's no real need here though as you are not limited to a certain number of letters.

You've got my vote on this as long as you don't check all my posts!

I'm waiting for Babelfish to add 'Yoof > English' on their list of options.
