Orange engine warning light

Hi, We have just recently changed our sons Yaris to a 2011, 1.4 D4D. The orange engine light came on and a slight loss of performance. I assumed it was the DPF might be blocked. Took it to the nearest Toyota agent who gave it a quick look and said they thought it was the DPF but needed it for a couple of hours to check it out properly.  Didn't have the time so took it away.

I have looked up on line and did a regeneration drive to see it it would reset but nothing. Drove it on the motorway at 2500 revs for about twenty minutes in fourth gear etc.

I don't want to spend about a Grand on a new filter yet before trying out all the other options. First question, do these additives to the fuel work and unblock the DPF or should I try cleaning the actual filter out with one of these other DPF cleaners. Or am I wasting my time and should I go straight to buying a new filter. Any suggestions or product recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

You could get yourself a cheap diagnostic code reader and see what fault codes are present. It hopefully should confirm your suspicions, or point you to the right direction.

You really need to have the codes read before doing anything. It could be a blocked EGR valve, air filter or a sensor. Or failed catalyst.

Did you buy it from a dealer withing 6 months ? If so covered by Sale of Goods Act... vendor has to be given right to fix it free..

Mileage ,service history would help.

You would feel somewhat miffed if after spending £1000s on a DPF, the problem was still there...
