service light coming on

Hi

I've a 2013 d4d which I've had from new.

Usually the yellow spanner light comes on after 9000 miles warning me that a service is due in 1000 miles(10k service period.)

after servicing the light is reset until a further 9k miles is covered.

After the last service (50k) the light was reset but came on again at 53k.

I managed to reset it it by doing the odometer/ignition routine but would like to know the cause.

My understanding is the maintenance light is simply a "mile counter" & has no link to the ecu or other engine functions.

Other than that the car runs fine.- anyone know why this happened ?

I think you have the  DPF issue. The oil level is above the max level.

You can check this on the oil dip stick to confirm.

Yep oil way over - thanks for that.

As the car is still under warranty I contacted my dealer with no luck as filters are excluded from warranty & was offered a forced regeneration at £250

(No  guarantee this would only be a temp fix.).

The problem seems to be with the regenerating process rather than the filter itself - by the same thought process a faulty alternator causing a permanently flat Battery would not be covered as batteries are excluded from the warranty.

I'll do an oil change go for a hard run & see what happens

regards

IB

DOn't waste your money on regen. I tried all that and i considered that from my experience with dpf issues on my Yaris. The problem will come back again after 1000 miles. You need to take it to a specialist DPF cleaning company... (Putting cleaning agent into the diesel will not work either).

But before doing any of the above. Please confirm the regen cycle first. Your oil level rises when a incomplete regen have occurred. Typically 4-6 times.

I took it for a blast yesterday - 60-70 mph for 50 miles.

I switched the display to show realtime mpg thiking if this went low it would show a regen is taking place- however it just stayed normal.

The oil level had lowered showing some of the diesel contamination had flashed off.

The light has stayed off for 140 miles now so touch-wood.

If the light comes on again then I need to take some action - I will let you know thanks.

nb - any experience of this process  (Terraclean):
