I don't think you can 'brick' your car, but you could mess some settings if you don't know what you are doing. The Techstream software (original or otherwise), is supposed to work with min-VCI USB to OBD2 cable with suitable drivers. I tried Techstream and mini-VCI off eBay and it worked to a point.

I now use Launch Creader Viii and it does what I need well.

Thanks, I will probably leave it alone. It does not matter as PCM scan obd work well, got 4 voltages for the oxygen sensor and a diagram, to show what the voltages are. Also torque pro shows air sensor and o2 sensor in real time on my phone.

Just googling techstream, it seems there's a lot of downloads.

Is it therefore just an obd2 to USB cable + ECU etc.

And if so presumably I could Regen my dpf?

Anyone tried this, if so which (of the many) downloads + cables work?!

You would probably need a good vcm (cable) and software.I had software from old techstream Chinese disc and would not find any ecu''s or functions.I got a better software and everything worked. Check out the best price on them and give it a try if it doesn't work for the regeneration either keep it as a self diagnosis tool or sell on.

Did you change from the vci techstream, Toyota.

To Creader for any particular reason, I only have a Toyota, however if Creader gives more results and or options would you recommend one above the other?

Interesting, I'd basically like to see what my car sees, correct problems fix/clear them, and use a tool that saves me €400 euros (e.g.) on a dpf regen.

The reason I changed is because the software I had, was cracked and was restricted. I wanted something that worked and the Creader does. I have used it on different makes of car. It has limits - it can't pinpoint some faults that the professional diagnostics can find.

An example - I had a fault with the EPB due to gear position sensor being disconnected. My Creader found the fault but could not clear it. I used the paperclip method which partially worked (must have been loosely connected). My friend an auto electrician had a new diagnostics device that cost thousands of pounds, initially removed the fault warnings and lights, but because the EPB was not releasing automatically, his device followed the fault to the real reason, describing the gear position sensor not connected and it's location. I did the rest by stripping airbox and piping to access the rear of the gearbox and reconnecting the securing the cable to the gear position sensor. The clutch had been changed and the cable was not connected properly/securely. A bolt was missing to hold the cable bracket and the plug was not clicked/locked on!
If I had working techstream, this may have found the fault.

Diagnostics can find a codes, but the more detailed the better. Also it shows that you still need spanners to fix the fault, and not just press a few buttons to 'clear' a warning!

Hi, thanks for the reply, it seems there's loads of cables with cracked Techstream s/w, googling they go up to v12 (w/out cable).

So... Is a cheaper cable going to work as well as any other independent of the s/w Version?

They range from €10-75 or more.

Most of the updates for Techstream are to add support for newer cars so if If you are looking for a 2012 Avensis then you don't need absolutely the latest version. There are differences between the various cheap VCI clones in terms of chip used & whether they can accept firmware udates etc.

Hi, thanks for the reply, so do I play pot luck , get a cable with V10 or so and hope the dongle is up to scratch on my 2012?(+/- download v1xxxx!)

I'd probably doubt the techstream software would work without the proper vcm cable.I could be wrong but I would buy a cable they are cheap enough I've a cloned mongoose cable and xhorse both cost under £20 and the chip in it is good and fairly quick.

the cracked versions seem to work well enough with clone cables & I would imagine all that they have done is apply a patch to the authentication part rather than any re-engineeringof the whole programme.

Yeah but would that patch work on a dongle that hillbillie is talking about?

I know my ford vcm won't work with the mazda software? Though if I buy a cloned ford vcm tool the software works fine?

would depend if the patch is generic or also has some kind of hardware check specific to that crack & that cable. I would't have thought it worth the extra effort to do that on a cheap clone but who knows?

I imagine that either your genuine Ford VCM or the Mazda software has a hardware check & the cloned one doesn't or responds as the correct Mazda hardware.
