Hello,

I know that others here have experienced power loss with D4D engines and have had various amounts of success dealing with it. Our 04 Previa has been doing it for several years. Usually topping out at 3500 revs and then the engine management light coming on and going into limp mode with a "stepper motor" warning. Well now a new one has appeared which is Fuel Pump "A" Control. It doesn't go into limp mode but has no power especially up hills.

Now, Toyota have quoted nearly £200 to 'diagnose' it but they can't even promise that they will get to the bottom of the problem. My question is is it worth investing in all this potential work (I wouldn't use Toyota for it) or is it time to bid a very fond farewell to out lovely Previa? It's only done 100000 miles....

I wonder if I should get the Suction Control Valves replaced before I try anything else?

Hi. Not that anyone here seemed to be interested but it was the fuel pump solenoid. I took it to a tiny specialist called rs mobile mechanics in Isleworth and they sorted it straight away. Just glad it wasn't the turbo...

That's a little unfair, JJ...

Not everyone is going to read your post..and not everyone who does, will respond.

The Previa (like my Estima) is not exactly thick on the ground here and so far fewer peeps will be attracted to your post...or knowledgeable about any issues you may have.

I'm really glad you got it sorted though..and great that you came back and told us what the problem was. ALL information is useful...and don't let this put you off from future posts should the need arise.

They are a great vehicle and I love my Estima...and there are Previa/Estima owners clubs out there.!!

Thanks Neil. I guess after two weeks I got bored! It seems to be the D4D Achilles heel with A LOT of fixes (some of which don't work). Anyway, it works now....

It is interesting reading this thread. I have owned a Toyota Previa 2.0 L Diesel Turbo.2006 for just over a year. It had low mileage of 40K when I bought it from 1 lady owner who had mainly been doing short school runs and had all scheduled servicing done.

After about 6K miles I was cruising along a relatively flat road when the engjne management light came on and I lost power. The car continued to move along slowly, but I had no acceleration. I pulled over, switched the ignition off and back on again and the power was restored. I called out the RAC the next day and they could not find any fault. They said the code was a turbo malfunction. They cleared the warming light.

This has happend a few times since, at irregular intervals, but mostly gaps of 1000's of miles. I have had this lokked at twice by a local garage to where I work. They used some additive to clean the engine and turbo and changed the fuel filter, which they said was very dirty.

Yesterday it had been about 5K miles since the last service and the last time I experienced the fault and twice, both times whilst going up a hill, I lost power. The second time I was in the process of overtaking a lorry on a hill and it was not easy to get into the nearside lane whist only having limited power. This was the closest I have been to being in a very dangerous situation because of this fault, and I am.now very frightened and lost a lot of confidence in Toyota and my Previa.

Yesterday was the first time I have lost power whilst going up.a hill. All previous times were on level roads.

Having owned several Toyota over many years and had long and reliable service this experience with this Previa has come as s shock and a big disappointment. My Wife's Corolla has also been recalled, so I am wondering if Toyota quality is not as good as it used to be. I bought this low moleage Previa hoping to get good and long service from it, like my previous Toyota's:(

Sorry to hear that, Stephen...that's such a shame as the Previa, like most Toyotas, are generally very reliable and well loved.

Clearly you have an underlying issue that has yet to be defined it seems.

I have scant knowledge of the diesel version as I only ever buy petrol engined vehicles, ....they seem to be generally problem free.

My V6 Estima has been utterly reliable thus far...and I hope it stays that way..!

I have had great reliability from a 1994 Toyota Townace (import) and Corolla, which I only let go in this last year. My Wife has a 2005 Corolla and I have the 2006 Previa now. It seems the new Toyotas are not as reliable as the old ones. It seems the Japanese have let their very high quality standards slip, which is such a shame, but there are not the only ones. I guess it is all down to costs/profit at the end of the day.

No modern diesel is as reliable as older ones - it's pretty much all due to being more complicated (turbos, intercoolers, common rail injection) & particularly emission control equipment that soots up.
