My engine stalled and failed to restart, the speedo and rev counter needles shot over to maximum and the starter sounded as if it was failing to engage, although I thought that it is pre-engaged.

I called out the RAC through my insurance company and the guy spent about 20 mins with some electronic gear checking out the electronics.  He said that the alternator was OK and although the Battery appeared to be 91% charged there was no amps.  The RAC man took about 30 mins to arrive at the beginning of the rush hour.

Consequently, I bought a new Battery from Halfords for £89.

Note the Battery recommended in the Halfords literature was too big for the clamp so I had bought a smaller battery, this Halfords battery (4 year guarantee) had lasted 12.5 years and 70,000 miles.
