"Fog" lights.

Checking my lights a few days ago I noticed one of the foglights wasn't working. Go for the simplest option first, the lamp, in spite of them hardly being used. Following the logic of if one fails then the other is soon to follow I looked in my owner's manual. That lists 55W H11 lamps as the correct type. I bought a pair of Osram H11 55W.

Now here are the anomolies. I removed both existing lamps, one did have a broken filament, and discovered they are Osram H16 19W as fitted at the factory! What? I have wondered why the ouput is poor.

Anyway I tried to fit the H11s into the Valeo light units but they will not fully insert, i.e. two of the three tabs will but not the third. The H11 and H16 look to be and measure the same with exactly the same locking tab configuration. Looking online for H16 lamps shows that they are quite rare and more costly than the ubiquitous H11s.

Question is, do I go by what the manual lists, if that is correct and bearing in mind that Osram H11s will not fit, or were the incorrect lights fitted at the factory? I purchased a cheap H11 through eBay and it fits fine!

They are not the easiest to change either, from underneath and removing plastic covers. Why do they design things like that rather than the ability to remove the complete light from the front?

I am, at the moment, corresponding with Osram as to what the possible problem could be.

Has anyone replaced their foglight lamps in a Mk 3 Yaris and if so did they find the same?

Oh, the instructions in the manual are not 100% correct either.

I've looked at the electronic owners manual for  a March 2014 Yaris, and that shows 19 watt H16's for the front fog lights .......... pages 684/685

Well my hard copy owners manual specifies 55W, Type B ( H11). Hence why I wrote " I looked in my owner's manual. That lists 55W H11 lamps as the correct type ".

The U.S. version of the manual, viewed online, specifies the same as the one I have which is also littered with U.S. spelling, e.g. license, tire etc.. Maybe I have been supplied with the wrong owners manual?

  • 1 month later...

The front fogs are useless!!! I can't even tell if they're on except for the light on the dash (they do work; I have got out and looked).

I have driven in absolute zero visibility at night in fog, but the DRLs are so bright even when dimmed for side-light mode, they dwarf the output of the fog lamps. I had to stop and wait for the fog to clear a bit (no bad thing really).
