16 plate Auris - eCVT clunkiness

I noticed that when I start the car up from cold and the engine goes into the idle warm up mode engaging D or R produces a bit of clunk every now and then. It happened a few times since I got the car last month, twice fairly violently (once from P into D, the other time from P into R) but I assumed that it might have been caused by the parking pawl. The other time when it happened - less violently - I was coming out of R into D.

I believe that there's no traditional parking pawl in this setup so I'm not sure what would be the cause for that noise? Or is it normal for eCVT gearboxes to be noisy?

I think there is a parking pawl but it is operated by an electric motor.

Perhaps that transmission brake is doing some work after all? But does that fit your noise from R into D?

I've never noticed of any reports of transmission noises like you mention on, say, PriusChat.

If you have a spare half-hour, this Youtube video is interesting (relatively).   https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=youtube+prius+gearbox+theory&view=detail&mid=B93AC5C260AC99A772ABB93AC5C260AC99A772AB&FORM=VIRE
