Right, I need all you N/a freaks help!:P

I was having a leisurely chat over a beer yesterday with a few of my CRX friends, and they have just made me a VERY determined Naturally Aspirated MR2 owner...

Basically, They have sworn blind that i CANNOT and WILL NOT be able to create a turbo beater. I (as a ball park figure) said "it would be nice to have a 300Bhp N/a", then it turned to a "Well im going to try and build one"....then to a "screw you guys, im GOING to build one!" Now im determined!

Is it actually possible?

If so what kind of upgrade and replacements would i need?

How much mula (£) do you think it will cost?

By the way...This is the old style 3S-FE engine.

Go on guys, give us your best shot!:)

Cheers

Dave!

Theres no way you can have a 3SFE in a G-Limited, are you sure its not a 3SGE.....

Oh and good luck by the way, I've heard of a guy who tuned an N/A to 300 horses but i'm sure he was running a lot of NOS.....

Posted

If it were an FE which is highly unlikely in a g-limited personally don't think you stand a chance, even with a GE I would imagine it to be difficult...

You'ld be looking at serious cash to get close and would imagine at a guess you'ld need to be looking at a stroker kit, head gasket, internals, dopwnpipe, exhaust, throttle bodies, chip etc

your looking at some serious money to attempt it but would love to see what you could get :)

you need a new engine to make it affordable, cram a 4.2litre V8 in there :P

would be a hell of an achievement to get 300bhp out of an NA, that'd 150bhp per litre if you keep the original 2.0 engine.... most modern engines struggle to make close to 100bhp per litre!

Yep, definately an FE in a G-Ltd, ill take pics. :)

So far its just got a remus exhaust system, and a k&n panel filter from the previous owner.

I am attempting it, and was originally looking at maybe this in my first set of things to do:

HKS Triple Layer Head Gasket

Forged Internals

Ported & Polished

Heads Skimmed

Dastek Unichip

Samco Coolant hoses

Am I going to get anything major in performance increase from doing these first?

Any suggestions also on the air filter and exhaust for performance?

I know there was a post on here about the "loudest" exhaust, but what about the most performance enhancing one? I have been speaking to MTTE about the SPL Departure 2 from Garage ********ui...which is a lovely exhaust, just not sure what performance gains.

I have about £700/month going into it, so its going to be a long project :D

even with that your not going to get anywhere close to 300

I know, this is only my first investment! :)

From here on in i will be putting about £700 a month into it until i get near that power level.

I just don't think it's possible without an engine swap

yeah, im in agreement with Sam. Theres no way the engine will get to 300bhp (N/A)..

The only way you'll get there is if you turbo/super-charge it (among other things) or drop in a bigger lump...

Posted

I know you can get over 300bhp out of a 4age n/a but it costs a :censor: load of cash :lol:

4age upgrades

Might be worth having a look at the above site I know it is about the 4age but you could maybe get some ideas on what you can get out of an 1.6 n/a engine, and then base that on your 2.0.

The link is based on the 4age not the 4afe as there is bugerr all you can do to a 4afe if your engine is the 3sfe not the 3sge will you not have the same problem?

Just becoming more and more determined now :D hehe

no m8, you're not listening... :P

the engine will physically run out of bhp before it gets to 300bhp!

think of it as trying to cycle at 50mph on a mountain bike, it just can't be done (and certainly not for long periods of time) - you need a racing bike, and you also need to be a top athlete...

see? :D

Hehe fair play...

Anywhoo, im still gona give it my best shot, ill post my progress each month :D

I look forward to the

"my engine block has melted, you guys were right" report

The best way to get more power would be to modify the engine so it can rev higher, thats how motorbike engines get so much power from such a small capacity. Basically power is related to the amount of air you pass through the engine. I reckon you will need to move the redline to at least 10,000 RPM and possibly further. Its going to be a difficult challange!!!

Posted

But one that i have gladly accepted

No doubt i WILL fry the engine at some point though!

As long as i get it running safely somewhere near that power level ill be happy!

what you've got to keep in mind m8, is that the MR2 Turbo will struggle to make 300 without extensive work...

Hope that sort of puts things in perspective :)

You'll need a stroker kit for starters .. and then all the forged internals to run silly RPM ..

For 300bhp I'd suggest the following :

HKS Stroker kit

Black Top beams head (Dual VVTi)

MoTec ECU

insanely tuned cams

and about 200 bhp shot of NOS ..

Thats cool, well aiming high is better than aiming low eh?

Where can i get these from then Bibbs?

Cheers

Owens can do the MoTec's, and I think Rogue can too .. £1500 (plus fitting and rolling road time)

Black Top Beams heads - Have to go via a car/parts importer, may be worth going for the whole engine out of an Altezza. Only problem with the black top's id the Engine mounts are in different places. Maby Rogue can source the front half of a car for you? I'd expect it to be about £5000 (plus fitting)

HKS Stroker kit - about £2200 I think, from any HKS supplier.

So that's almost £9k without putting it together ..

Posted

Good stuff :)

Then come the forged pistons etc, compression bits, and just general strengthening so i can run lots more rpm because at the moment mine redlines at 6k rpm!

Your best bet is to do all the standard mods, and then go spend a lot of money with the Wizards of Nos. www.noswizard.com (or similar). A progressive controller and 100-150bhp jets (if the engine can handle it) should do the job.

Posted

yeah....

BUT...

If you install NOS, then its not really a N/A engine anymore is it??

Posted

I think you're absolutely barmy m8

you're prepared to spend (I imagine) £15k on a 10 year old N/A car? :o

Why not just get an N/A car that's easy to tune in the first place?

and £700 a month? you could lease/finance a nissan 350z for fun!
